Ickes Warns Of More Coal Restrictions

Secretary Ickes warned that most coal miners under 26 will not be deferred from the draft and predicted tighter coal use next winter. He cited 36,400 workers under 26, noting 20,000 would be inducted if no deferments are granted, risking a 23 million ton loss in output. The forecast compounds a larger national deficit and prompts renewed manpower action by the War Manpower Commission.
