Local items from Troy include social visits, church matters, temperance discussions, and a county medical association meeting. Included are remarks on finances, a large dog census, a lively horse trade, and a forty-year friendship gathering at Col. Muti's.
A break in last Saturday night at DD W Gladney near Auburn reports loss of a fifty dollar greenback a twenty dollar bill and silver from near the bed. J G Finley slept in the same room and his pocket book with notes and papers was taken. The next morning Gladney found his book in the road a hundred yards away with the money gone and Finley’s book on the back porch. That night Charley Gladney’s horse was stolen and Cyrus Finley’s house was entered with money taken. A description of a suspect is given and fifty dollars is offered for the thief’s apprehension and conviction.
The notice reports a strict cash business push from Parker & Co dated January 2 1878 urging outstanding debts to be paid promptly. A separate event note mentions a recent gathering that drew many country attendees, adjourned to the courthouse due to space limits, with a good supper and overall enjoyment.
Winter bargains slash prices as J. W. Vanken & Co advertise deeply discounted goods. Clear emphasis on low cost and availability, urging customers to visit their Meating le & Co location for the DERFULLY cheap offerings.
Truxton, January 17, 1878. Editor Herald reports a sensational tale about Dr. C. D. Faulconer swallowing a cocklebar twenty five years ago. Witness J. J. Emery, M. D. confirms the event and notes the bar was embedded in his lung. Doctor Faulconer credited with relief from asthma after the removal, with the tale ending amid local notices and advertisements.
The notice reports muddy roads the wheat crop looking well and corn nearing gathering with no fishing prospects. It notes Dry Branch settlement with Darnell & Co’s drug store, hogs and neighbors shipping meat, and requests a cattle buyer with cash. It mentions a church meeting, rules about seating, and local people praising Mr. Grout and Dr. Northcutt’s works, while criticizing an Olney chap and a proposed ban.
Goode and Tila work at the Dry Goods front quarters with ads for cash only. Notices announce marriages: Warner Smith on January 13 near Olney by Rev Owens. Howard Trob on January 19 near Burr Oak by Rev Jem Button. Attendees Goodman and Ming Ardcos Robertson.
