Railroad Construction in 1874 Miles of New Track Reported
The Railroad Gazette notes 1925 miles of track laid on new railroads in 1874 the smallest since years. Mileage rose earlier then fell but several states exceeded 1873. About 18 percent of new roads use three foot gauge and are light and cheap. The Gazette forecasts favorable credit terms for permanent improvements if security holds and materials remain affordable post panic of 1873. It predicts few lines built in 1875 solely for profit as fortunes from prior years are exhausted.
