Forty Miles of Interstate Opened in Iowa Labor Day

A 40 mile Iowa interstate segment from Dexter to near Atlantic opened on Labor Day, bringing total completed mileage to 137 with another 17 miles planned in Scott county, as Iowa nears 170 miles total. The project cost 26.6 million with paving 15.6 million and grading 4.2 million. Life saving awards were given at the state fair to five Iowans, a Hereford steer named Nixon won top beef honors, and a public hearing on Highway 30 relocation proceeded despite bypass concerns. Farmers' income sagged in 1959, with average net income at 2961 dollars and state totals down from 1958. Drop-out rates and August public assistance also highlighted state education and welfare concerns.
