County Conference on Education Here Thursday
A county wide education conference opens Thursday at the Tripoli High School auditorium at 6 30 p m. The event is part of a national series leading to a Governor's conference in Des Moines and a President's conference in Washington D C later in the fall. Conference chairman is R C Gaard and Tripoli delegates are Dr L J Magnall and Supt E R Shriver with local representatives named. Eight study groups will convene on topics from school community relations to financing education with an all conference meeting set for Oct 10.

Mayor Rudolph Piegers reported $72 in fines from Aug 1 to Sept 7 for traffic violations. Erwin Drewis of Tripoli paid $2 plus $1.50 costs for improper parking. Charles Braatz of Clear Lake paid $10 plus $1.50 costs for careless driving. Roger Kimball of Readlyn paid $50 plus $5 for reckless driving with a suggested 60 day license suspension. Readlyn special obituary notes Mrs. John Buhr 74 died Saturday at her Readlyn home from a heart condition. Sumner to Represent Iowa in Regional ABC Tourney
Sumner will play in the western regional American Baseball Congress tournament in Water Town South Dakota representing Iowa for the second straight year. The Sumner Cubs won the state championship last Friday by defeating Peoples Finance of Des Moines 3-2 in ten innings. Bremer County Retail Sales Hit Nearly 18 Million
Retail sales in Bremer county for the year ending March 31 totaled 17,914,759.50 with 358,295.19 in sales tax remittances. Waverly’s 845 merchants accounted for 7,527,113 in sales and 170,542.26 in tax. Sumner and Tripoli reported 3,681,972.50 and 1,810,203 in sales respectively plus tax. Non-permit sales totaled 6,497 in 129.94 tax. Tripoli led per merchant with 9,051 average. others averaged 8,908 in Waverly, 8,543 in Sumner, 4,370 in rural areas, and 722 in non-permit sales.

Tripoli Canning Co is finishing this year's sweet corn canning with yields near last year's record pack. Plant Manager Al Rieck said output will be about 15 percent below the prior year’s 100000 case peak.
