Cattle Price Outlook Signals Modest Fall Dip
Iowa State University economist Gene Futrell expects fed cattle and slaughter cow supplies to keep prices soft into early next year. Mid October bids for choice slaughter steers in Iowa were 26 to 27.25 dollars per hundredweight, with a predicted roughly one dollar drop by late November and another dollar by March. The cattle on feed report shows an 11 percent rise from a year ago, with heifers driving much of the near term movement as marketing weights stay light, supporting prices despite abundant corn and weak demand.

Cattle Market Outlook Sees Feeder Placements Influencing Prices
The outlook notes cattle will gain weight as feeder placements in fall and winter shape market demand after early 1969. Despite doubts about past year-to-year placement surges continuing, calf placements late fall and early winter should run slightly above last year, aligning with a two percent rise in the 1968 beef calf crop. A correction clarifies the Oct 1 Iowa corn crop estimate as a half percent below the year-earlier figure.
