Hog market glance from Iowa State economist

Farm Economist Francis Kutish of Iowa State University says this fall’s hog decline may end, but seasonal high marketing later could bring further weakness. On Sept 1, 6 months plus old hogs were down 17 percent and pigs under 3 months were down 7 percent on Corn Belt farms. Farmers are not expanding spring farrowing as in 1958, and beef slaughter will rise, suggesting hog prices stay below 1958 but above 1959 for the rest of the fall.
