Neighbors and friends surprised Mr and Mrs Peter Mahlstedt at their northeast Tripoli home on their nineteenth anniversary. The evening featured a 500 card game with prizes to Louie Zell and Mrs Luke Hannaman for high score and Roy Rathbone and Mrs James Meighan for low score. A mock wedding followed with Clyde Webster as minister and a full bridal party. A cafeteria supper was served to those present including numerous local families.
Mr and Mrs A A Finch marked their fiftieth anniversary with a noon dinner at Alpha home attended by forty guests including their three daughters and husbands and grandchildren. About 200 friends visited in the late afternoon and evening as a reception followed the celebration.
Ernest Tegtmeier was elected commander for the ensuing year at a regular meeting of the Bock Haus Bartels Post of the American Legion in the Legion Hall Monday evening. Herman Kuhrt was elected vice commander with officers Adjutant August Eichmann finance officer L H Fink chaplain Dr E C Claus publicity officer Lee O Peacock service officer Ed J Henning and executive committee members N R Ambrose Fred Ambrose Carl Krueger Lee Goodenbour E G Michael. A joint county Legion Auxiliary meeting will be held at Waverly Monday evening October 12 to elect county officers.
The St Peter's Evangelical church held its annual mission festival with three services on Sunday. Morning speakers included Rev H Krueger of Denver and Rev Athenstadt of Leroy township. Afternoon talks by Rev W A Koch of Fredericksburg and Rev Karl Pfeiffer of Siegel followed, with Rev W Hackmann speaking in the evening. Neighboring congregations attended and a church ladies’ dinner and lunch fed visitors.
Funeral services for Daphene Loretta Nieman two months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Edwin Nieman were held Sunday afternoon at St John s Lutheran church Buck Creek with Pastor Rev H Kuhlman officiating Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery.

Mrs Her man Boeckman, 70, died at Osnes hospital Monday at 5:00 from injuries after a Saturday auto crash on Buck Creek road near the Otto Meier farm. Her leg was amputated after injury and internal damage caused death. Her son in law Louis Tiedt and a grandchild were unhurt. Survived by daughter and husband Louis Tiedt and grandchildren Emil Tiedt and Mrs Martin Schumacher. Funeral at Zion Lutheran church with Rev H A Schultz.
Mrs Edna Ganske was surprised last Wednesday evening when neighbors and friends gathered to celebrate her birthday a few days early. The group played 500 and enjoyed a lunch prepared by the guests. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Alvin Sommer and children. Theodore Stahlhut and daughter. John Struck and daughters. Fred Meyer and daughter. Lee Hill and daughters. Elmer Kneadler and son. Paul Schroeder. Albert Volker. Henry Stahlhut and daughter. Ernest Bodermann. Albert Reich and sons. Henry Meyer and family. Ben Moeller and family.
Mr and Mrs Albert Rieck were surprised Thursday evening October 14 as neighbors and friends gathered at the Rieck home to celebrate his birthday. They visited and played 500 before a lunch. Attending were Mr and Mrs Emil Steege and daughter Mr and Mrs Al Schmeltzer Mr and Mrs Herbert Bodermann Mr and Mrs Theodore Stahlhut Mr and Mrs Louie Meyer and daughter Mr and Mrs Alvin Sommer and family Mr and Mrs Henry Meyer and family Mr and Mrs Ervin Schwake and daughter Miss Erma Schedtler Mr and Mrs Elmer Knendler Mr and Mrs John Lantow and Mr and Mrs Otto Reick and family.

Bremer special reports Ed Leitha fell ten feet in the machine shed at work, dislocating his collar bone. He was taken to Mercy Hospital, bandaged, and later confined to bed to allow ligaments to knit after the bone displaced again at home.

Tripoli readers are set for October 12 and 13 as the Legion Auxiliary presents the professional style musical comedy A Bachelor’s Escapade at the Tripoli opera house. A cast of 35 locals, under Laura E. Higel of the Mid-West Producing Co Omaha, promises sparkling wit music dances and lavish costumes to raise funds for the Auxiliary. Reserved seats go on sale October 10 at Sorg Drug Store.
A fire originating from an unknown source caused extensive damage to household goods and woodwork in the Sauerbrei residence on south Main Street last Wednesday afternoon. Chemicals were used to extinguish the blaze which was confined to one bedroom. Owner John Warnke reported the house was unoccupied at the time.
Fremont Farm Bureau township holds a meeting at the Chapin school house Friday evening. A program by the school children, movies, and talks are planned with refreshments served.

A family birthday gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Koch celebrated Adolph Kochs 65th birthday with a dinner, supper, music, and visiting. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Koch and children, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kirchhoff and children, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Treaton, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Bunger and family, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hunemueller, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bunger and Mrs. Mary Bunger.
Artesian special paving crew completed a three mile stretch on No 59 Saturday evening, work began August 31 and finished in twenty days. Rain delayed the last half mile about ten days. Dirt removed from the paving on the two and a half miles. Fox Construction firma progressing with shoulder and dirt work and may finish in about two weeks if weather holds.
Fog caused poor visibility in a head on crash one half mile north of Readlyn last Thursday morning. Lawrence Beewers and Alfred Buhrow collided with oncoming vehicles as Buhrow headed to the creamery and Beewers northward. Neither driver was injured. Beewers claims the Buhrow car was in the wrong of way.
Nicolas Rodriguez fatally shoots Sheriff Guss Jorgenson at a farm as authorities move to arrest him for disturbing the peace. Rodriguez is then slain a few hours later in the same incident near Granada Minnesota.
Clarksville residents report Mrs. Roberts wins lowest score in Class A at the Waverly district ladies tournament held in Nashua with Mrs. Strumple of Sumner as runner up and Charlotte Mooney securing second place in the next county contest. District tournament set for Friday October 9 and many plan to attend. Wilbur Harmening taken to New Hampton on bootlegging and resisting arrest charges after arrest in Tripoli. held in county jail, to face Chickasaw County case before Bremer county proceedings.
Reverend J. K. Hawkins, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church in this city for the past year, has been transferred to Eldora with his wife departing last week. Reverend H. Temple of Waukon succeeds here, bringing a Cornell College Mt. Vernon graduate background and postgraduate work in Scotland.
George Shortau of Fayette county, who pleaded guilty to assault and battery and was fined 25 dollars plus costs, appeared at the sheriff’s office on September 30 and asked to be jailed for nonpayment. He is serving eight days in the county jail.
The Ludwig property including the J C Penny building Rosalie apartments and a house and lot north of the apartments was sold at sheriff s sale last week and taken in by Spahn Rose Lumber Company and the Washington Loan Trust Company both holding large liens against the properties.
Resigns as Secretary Joe P. Grawe, long time efficient secretary of the Bermer county fair, will vacate the post effective January 1. Geo. M. Vosseller reelected president, Claude Wylam vice president, and W. H. Babcock treasurer. A new secretary to succeed Mr. Grawe will be elected.
C. R. Brinkmann of this city married Mrs. Leota Crawford of Chicago, formerly of Waterloo, in Chicago last week. The couple will live in the apartment Brinkmann shared with his son for some time.
Waverly notes sad news as Mrs George Brown learns of her brother Emil Goettsch 14 of Clinton Iowa missing after falling from Clinton Boat club dock into the Mississippi river. Also reports of twelve silos by Miks Casper two on Harrison farm near Nashua and for Mrs Boderman at Elma. Thieves steal auto tools from Waverly Brewery warehouse garage. Dodds defeats Johannsen 52 to 51 in city tournament third flight. Woodleigh Wile reassigned to Cedar Falls East Side Standard Oil station replacing Art Kelling who resigned after 13 years.
