Ripoli Post Office operates from a brand new building with 410 lock boxes and 113 additional boxes for rent. Local Postmaster Ray H. Fink notes patrons can obtain their own boxes, while general delivery and box access continues through a combination service lobby with hours extended to 7 p.m. when counters are closed.
Highway Patrolmen arrested 35 drivers for speeding on the blacktop south of Tripoli during Friday and Saturday nights. One vehicle was clocked at 106 mph. Two drivers faced allegations of operating without permits. Suspects were summoned to appear in justice court.
Tripoli area residents are reminded that the black-top parking area adjacent to the new post office building is for government vehicles only and not for use by Tripoli post office customers or downtown shoppers. This regulation applies to post office grounds generally in all cities.
With Thanksgiving near, a large crowd is expected in Tripoli for a 3 pm giveaway of 25 free turkeys at the American Savings Bank corner. Merchants back the event. tickets are in participating stores and registrants must be present to win. Merchants and families excluded.
Jean Magnall appeared on the Jackpot segment of the Strike It Lucky TV program after bowling a high district series in Oelwein. She cleared the first jackpot step with a five-pin pickup, fell one short on the second step, then finally cashed in with a washout 1-2-4-7-10 to win $10.00.
Postmaster Fink says the new workroom equipment has not arrived yet but staff will maintain service. Most equipment is expected soon and a formal dedication and open house date have not been set by officials.
The Tripoli Commercial Club will hold its annual meeting next Monday evening at Town Hall with dinner at 7 pm. Dr. C. R. Barry chairs the program featuring Dr. John Walker who will present slides on Jerusalem and the Holy Land, a topic highlighted by current international attention. Public admission is free. business includes election of officers, board members, and plans for the Christmas drive.
Mrs Walter Buls of Tripoli is recovering from injuries after a Thursday night auto crash near Dunkerton. A broken wrist and knee laceration were sustained. she was taken to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Passenger Mrs LeSha Ladage escaped unharmed. they had visited Lavern Lohman in Marion.
Town of Tripoli awarded contracts for a new sewage disposal plant. Kehe Construction Co. of Waverly won $27,402.50 for excavation and fill and access work. Hudson's Taylor and Isenhower secured $34,343.91 for the sewage lift station and related components. Work to begin soon.
The Iowa Association of County Superintendents held their annual election of officers during the Iowa State Teachers convention in Des Moines on November 2. R. C. Gaard, Bremer County superintendent of schools, was elected president of the association.
Driver license examiners will be at the Town Hall in Tripoli Saturday morning from 8:30 until 12 noon for motorists in Bremer County who want licenses or renewals. Truck drivers and chauffeur licenses can be accommodated and learner's permits issued. If unsure about renewal, check. Examiners will not return to Tripoli until Dec 17.
The American Legion announces its annual poultry party set for Saturday November 19 at Tripoli Town Hall. Door prize offered and everyone is welcome to attend.
Judy Sickles of Janesville, a senior at Iowa State University in Ames, received the Outstanding Senior Woman award during Women's Day. She was chosen for campus contributions, scholastic achievement, and character. A banquet in the Memorial Union honored her and 150 student leaders, with Mrs Arch Michel of Des Moines addressing the gathering. The event is sponsored by Mortar Board.
Coaches named the all conference football team for 1960. Tripoli led with eight mentions, followed by Janesville with five and Denver with three. Dunkerton Fredericksburg Wapsie Valley and Plainfield received multiple honors, with players listed by position and school.
Frederick H. Harmening of Tripoli died after a brief illness at 77. Funeral services were Wednesday at Rettig Funeral Home with Rev. E F. Ruhlmann officiating. Casket bearers included Wilbert Harmening John Munsterman Theo Hartmann and others. Survived by wife Emma, son Orval of Skokie Ill, two sisters and two grandchildren. preceded by five brothers and three sisters.
Interstate Power Com pany started a major street lighting upgrade in Tripoli Iowa. Nine mercury vapor luminaires with 20 000 lumen output each will be mounted on Main street with five on the east and four on the west. Ronning Electric Co of Kenyon Minnesota holds the contract, at a cost exceeding 12 000 dollars billed to the power company. Additional 23 luminaires will replace fixtures along Main street and in blocks of 1st Ave West and 2nd Ave West. The town council supported the project, funded by Interstate, with only a slight rise in the town’s monthly light bill expected.
Bremer County receives 1959 60 general aid warrants for 614 high and 1086 non high districts statewide. A new Tripoli basketball season brings anticipated games on the home court with both boys and girls teams. The opener at Greene Friday night precedes a home game versus Janesville on Wednesday November 23. Season tickets for adults are four dollars and can be bought from players, local stores, or at the gate.
A daring holdup occurred Thursday around 11 p m at the home of Claude and Mrs Wilharm of Sumner Produce. A bandit held the occupants at gunpoint in the kitchen then forced them to the bath room and stole over 3000 dollars in coins and cash intended for egg route operations. He ripped the phone from the wall before fleeing. The sheriff’s office investigates. number of accomplices unknown.
Bertha Tegtmeier donated a speaker stand to the Tripoli American Legion in memory of her brother, WWI veteran Ernest Tegtmeier. The stand now sits in the Tripoli Town Hall, donated last week.
Grace Lutheran Ladies Aid sponsors a bake sale and bazaar on Saturday November 19 from 2 to 5 o clock at the Interstate Power Co 51.
The Tripoli Panthers open the basketball season with conference games at Denver Friday night. The boys fell 3 to 32 as poor shooting doomed them while the Tripoli girls pulled out a 33 to 30 victory led by Karen Boeckmann with 17 points and strong guard play from Elinor Stumme. Other Friday results included Fredericksburg over Janesville 37 to 31 and Plainfield edging Dunkerton 43 to 41.
