Replace Heavy Cattle With Lighter Stock
Iowa State University economist William Uhrig says the cattle market will stay weak through year end due to higher marketing, heavier slaughter weights, and plentiful competing meats. He favors selling heavy cattle when finished and replacing them with lighter stock to lower cost of gain. Feeder cattle prices show weakness while 12 North Central states and Colorado plan a 15 percent rise in October-December marketing, with Iowa feeding about one-third of North Central output. as heavy cattle remain abundant, lighter cattle numbers have fallen, and replacement prices may stay flat or drop in 1963.
