Longest Costliest General Assembly Ends After 125 Days
Iowa closes its 60th General Assembly, the longest and costliest regular session at 125 days with an estimated expense around 1.25 million dollars. The chamber split over tax plans, defeating a large tax increase in a 26 to 23 vote that would have added about 52 million yearly revenue and tied the budget to 255 million. The final compromise would raise sales and use tax to three percent, raise corporate tax to four percent, add a two percent surtax on dividends and interest, and repeal several property taxes, with 24 million for property tax credits, 13.5 million for school aid, and 9 million for agricultural land tax credits.

He credited the House for progress and noted that the Senate's failure to pass a compromise relieved him from a veto decision. He believed most people opposed a property tax relief plan that cost more than benefits received.
