The 60th General Assembly approved a proposed U S Constitution amendment banning the poll tax in all federal elections, making Iowa the 32nd state to ratify. Ratification by 38 states is still required before it becomes part of the Constitution. Five states Alabama Arkansas Virginia Mississippi and Texas currently have poll taxes.
