Thistles Spread in Iowa Linked to Weather and Poor Rotations

Otto Hoffmann, former extension weed specialist at Iowa State College, notes Canadian thistles have increased in Iowa over the last two years due to cool wet summers. He warns that thistle control fails when farm rotations are ignored and recommends two years of spraying and seasonal use of 24-D for fields and chlorate or Atlacide for small patches, plus smother crops like alfalfa. He also cautions that spraying in corn is ineffective and that underseeded oats can be harmed.

Market Outlook for Cattle and Hogs Reflects Supply Pressures

Ample beef supplies and weak hide and tallow values press the late April fat cattle market. Iowa State economist Francis Kutish notes liberal feed cattle in coming weeks with plans to market more in May and June. He cites cautious sentiment, predicting steady to slightly lower fed cattle prices and a strong summer market for long fed cattle. Farrowings drop sharply with spring pig crop down 12 to 15 percent, improving next winter hog feeding ratios if corn breaks. L. C. Hill retires after 53 years in Columbus Junction business, dating to 1899.
