Local effort rapidly completes organization under the Bockhaus-Bartels Post American Legion Tripoli Commercial Club and Tripoli public school. Scoutmaster W H Meier leads with assistant scoutmasters G H Doty and John Simpson. Nineteen boys attended the first meeting. another gathering is scheduled at 7 30 pm next Monday at the American Legion hall. Parents and interested youths urged to contact Mr Meier for information as the community supports this venture.
A spring county meeting of the Bremer county American Legion Auxiliary units will be held in Sumner on Friday afternoon May 4 at 2 o'clock. The event will elect county officers for the ensuing year and install them at the district meeting next fall. All county officers unit presidents and members are urged to attend at the Legion Hall Sumner.
Local Leader office advertises printing services for readers and businesses. It invites customers to bring their printing needs to the newsroom for efficient turnaround and reliable work.
A Sunday gathering at Mr and Mrs s Mer man Fries home honored the host’s birthday, with many relatives attending from Waterloo Morton Sumner Waverly Crane Creek Neadiyn plus local families. A supper and midnight lunch were served. cards and visiting followed.
Funeral services for Fred Niemeyer senior were held Friday at 1 30 p m from the home of his son Ed Niemeyer and family. Rev C G Gerlach officiated. Burial was in Fremonth cemetery. He was 85 and died April 25 after a short illness. His wife and one daughter preceded him in death. Surviving are three daughters Mrs Henry Schnieder of Fairbanks Mrs Frank Goodenbour and Mrs Albert Kuhrt of Waterloo. three sons Ed of this city Fred of Crane Creek and Will.
April loan period ended with 45 cents per bushel government loans. Bre mer county farmers received 87,017.40 dollars for 198,372 bushels, across 267 borrowers averaging about 380 dollars each. In April 14 farmers applied for loans totaling 4,592 dollars.
Dr E C Claus of this city was elected third district commander of the American Legion at the spring conference in Cedar Falls held Thursday April 26. Other officers named include D E Lawless Grundy Center first vice commander Clifton Campbell Clarion second vice commander Glen T Cowan Iowa Falls third vice commander. Auxiliary officers elected were Mrs Clare Cullison district committee woman Mrs Edna Malloy State Center vice committee woman Mrs Dorothy Ashley Grundy Center district secretary Mrs Dorothy Claus Tripoli district treasurer Mrs Bess Arens Aplington district historian. The meeting opened with greetings from Cedar Falls mayor W S Willard Post commander Archie Mether and unit president Mrs James Gaffney. After luncheon the ladies toured the city, a luncheon ride, and both groups met at Pfeiffer hall for a 6:30 banquet with about 350 present. W F Sieverding retiring district commander and Mrs Roy Pell retiring district committeewoman presided, the evening ending with dancing.
Mrs Amelia Ambrose was honored at a birthday dinner hosted by her son William Ambrose at his home. Attendants included her children and grandchildren, all from the city, with a 1 pm meal and a 5:30 pm luncheon, celebrating her 75th birthday on Saturday April 28.
On account of quitting business and needing funds to meet obligations, all book accounts due must be settled in the next ten days by cash or bankable notes. Joe Sien, 18.
Mr and Mrs A W Mooney of Oelwein were guests of relatives for a Sunday celebration marking their twenty fifth wedding anniversary. An anniversary cake by Miss Adella Krumweide from Waverly topped the table amid pink and silver decor. Attending were relatives from Oelwein Sumner Dunkerton Waverly Brandon and Spring Fountain with meals and visiting as the main activities.
A birthday gathering at the Wm. F. Krueger residence celebrated his 52nd year with afternoon and evening activities. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Henry Krueger, Mr. and Mrs. August Krueger, Mr. and Mrs. John Becker, and others. cards and entertainment preceded supper and a midnight lunch.
The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors its annual Poppy Poster contest. Judging occurs Saturday, with winning posters displayed in local business windows. The first prize winner will be sent to the state department by May 10 for state contest entry at Sorg drugstore window Saturday afternoon and evening.
Shell Rock faces Tripoli at the local ball park to start the Cedar Valley league season on Sunday May 6. Manager Henry W. Krueger has the team working out frequently as the eligible list includes Amos Belknap Wesley Bockhaus James Bennett and other players. Other opening games Sunday feature Sumner at Readlyn and Nashua at Waverly.
Miss Luetta Busch became the bride of Harold Kehe in a Tuesday evening ceremony at Zion Lutheran church in Readlyn. Rev J G Bearman read the double ring service. Clarence Pries played the wedding march and led the procession. The couple hosted a two course wedding dinner for 25 at the bride’s home. about 200 well wishers gave a charivari with treats. The bride, daughter of Rudolph and family, wore yellow net with pink rose bouquet. The groom, son of Charles Kehe of Denver, is a farmer. Both plans remain open.
Supt T J Durant will begin his 36th consecutive year leading Sumner public schools next September. All faculty contracts signed and returned to secretary C H Grannemann except one revision. Teaching staff listed with roles and grades. Fred Wittenberg rehired as janitor. girls basketball dropped as the sole major program change.
Mrs Pearl King of Oelwein, district deputy for the R N A, was an overnight guest of Mrs F W Klein. She left for Bassett Wednesday morning to promote fraternal work.
A J Hallman, 72, died Friday April 28 at Independence hospital after months of illness from hardening of the arteries and complications. Born August 7, 1861 in Waverly, he was a son of Theodore and unknown Hullman pioneers. Survived by wife, sister Mrs A VanSamn Mitchellville IA, brothers T C of this city and F W of Huxley IA. Funeral from Kaiser Funeral Home Monday at 2 p.m. with Rev Giles Sharpley of Episcopal church officiating. burial in Harlington cemetery.
Howard Hubler 22 of Marshall town lies in critical condition at Mercy hospital after a motorcycle accident in the Big Woods Sunday. Hubler, with Waterloo and Black Hawk club members, had just bought a high powered cycle from Paul Brokaw and reportedly was not used to handling the machine. He vanished down a steep hill and the bike plunged over an embankment pinning him beneath it. He sustained a fractured skull spinal injuries and other injuries and was unconscious Monday with little hope for recovery.
Mrs Mary E Willis age 85 died at her home Wednesday morning after a heart attack while dressing. She had lived with her niece and her husband Arden L Young and wife since seven years ago. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Friday afternoon with Rev Oltrogge officiating. Burial followed in Harlington cemetery.
Three year old Robert McGowan suffers facial and mouth burns after drinking lysol from a discarded bottle. Doctors expect no serious harm beyond the burns.
