Miami Beach reports a new modest dress concept dubbed the bandana bib spreading across the nation as warm weather arrives. The piece notes sun exposure, fashion adoption, and commentary on national issues including economy, taxation ideas from Florida figures, and cultural observations from Moscow to Florida.
The marriage of Miss Isabelle Panzer of this city to Mandel Kramer of New Hampton took place at Waterloo on December 10, 1931. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Panzer, is a Tripoli high school graduate of 1927 and Wartburg College alumna. The groom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Kramer of New Hampton, works at the Panzer produce house. They will reside with the bride’s parents and begin their life together with best wishes from friends.
Mrs. Fred Kuhrt nee Emma Pichelman died at her home in Tripoli on Sunday March 27 at 630 PM after several weeks illness from Brights disease. She was born February 17 1872 in Warren township Bremer county and married Fred Kuhrt April 1 1912. Funeral services will be at home April 1 at 1 PM and St Peters Evangelical church at 130 PM with Rev Hilligardt and Rev Koehler officiating. Interment in St Peters cemetery north of town.

The American Legion Auxiliary hosted a benefit party at the Legion hall Monday with about fifty guests. Bridge was played, A. F. Eichmann won high score and Mrs. H. H. Sorg took the consolation prize. Admission was a deck of cards for the women and a pack of cigarettes for the men, to be sent to the Knoxville veterans hospital. Thirty packs of cards and thirty-three packs of cigarettes were collected.
Monday March 28th marked the birthday of Charles C. Berlin. Relatives gathered Sunday for an afternoon visit and birthday supper. Attending were sister Mrs. Mary Cammerman of Denver, Mr. and Mrs Bernard Dammerman of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs Ford Hackbarth nearby, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Doepke and children nearby, and Mr. and Mrs John Berlin Sr. of the city.

Town officers election yields 207 votes. U L McCumber retained mayoralty with 178 votes while H J Bunger won treasurer 193 to Hale 90 and Bunger 97 on a single ticket. Other council results include Ambrose 193 Meier 190 Krueger 192 Buhr 194 Bang 191. Big Sumner celebration for incumbents with 589 straight votes. Denver sees dark-horse bids and Bast wins second term with 80. Plainfield reelects Theodore Pockels mayor 104 to Orcutt 50 and Langandorfer 19.
At the city election on Monday March 28 the mayor and several city officers were reelected. R L Barber is mayor F C Rewoldt Jr is treasurer Seth McGee was elected assessor W H Ager C E Carroll R A Grover S J Mooney and Chas Richmond were reelected as councilmen. L S Gillett was nominated at caucus and on the ballot. 103 ballots were cast with McGee receiving 58 votes and Gillett 40. ten ballots were spoiled. Remaining officials faced no opposition.
Sumner residents approved a municipal electric power plant by 635 to 350, funded from earnings. With a population of 1,561, over 1,000 ballots were cast. The plant will be built under the Simmer state law allowing municipalities to finance plants via anticipated power sales to users. The Marengo mayor and two councilmen attended the election.
The Evangelical League will present a program Thursday evening in the basement of St Peter’s Evangelical church. March 31 events include opening song by the congregation, welcome by Rev K K Koehler, readings by Wilbur Gebbert and Clifford Eichman, solos by Orval Harmen Mabel Gebbert Norma Scheve Odette, a saxophone solo, violin solo, slides on The Medical Mission of India, and a benediction by Rev Koehler.
Erna Ashbrenner and Arnold Tiedt united in holy wedlock Sunday afternoon at Spring Fountain church with Rev Born officiating. The double ring ceremony featured Lohengrin’s wedding march and songs by Mrs Born as attendants entered the decorated aisle. About 100 guests attended a 5 p.m. wedding dinner at the bride’s home. The bride, a 1928 Sumner graduate and rural school teacher, will finish her year and live on the groom’s Readlyn-area farm. the groom works on the farm and will farm.
The senior class of Tripoli high school rehearses for the annual class play to be staged Friday evening, April 8 at the opera house. A full story and cast will appear in next week's Laeder. Miss Esther Haase of Waterloo spent Easter Sunday with her parents near Frederika.
Des Moines report details an Iowa case where 22 of 23 oil firms held funds in escrow at Bankers Trust in Des Moines. Attorney Leonard Simmer, who won the case, placed a lien until a 50 percent contingent fee was settled. Legislators amended the law to use motor vehicle fuel instead of gasoline to prevent future actions. The list totals 118,477.65 dollars across many companies, with the last being owned by Simmer himself.
The Tri poli Independent School District board trimmed staffing by one high school teacher and cut wages, saving about 2000. Most faculty are expected to return next year, except Mrs. Vanderlinden and Miss McCreary who were not up for re election. The board also discussed using a basement recitation room now deemed unsuitable, and tentatively considered eliminating one more high school position to avoid renting external space.
Mr and Mrs William Henning and their children Douglas and Suzanne of Iowa City visited Sunday at the home of her brother E J Henning and wife in Sumner alongside her parents Mr and Mrs P A McIntyre of Sumner.
A study center will be held in the senior study hall at Waverly High School on April 2 in Waverly Iowa. The morning session begins at 9 30 and covers term yearly reports reading and year work. Mildred E Smith county superintendent presides. Emma Watkins from the State University of Iowa leads the afternoon, showing first grade group instruction and silent reading work. All teachers with county or normal certificates must attend two study centers yearly. The public is invited to attend.
Readlyn special report of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bruns senior celebrating their golden wedding anniversary on March 23 at their home. Guests included numerous relatives, gifts featured a green gold garden centerpiece and a three layer wedding cake. A mock wedding, grandchildren singing, and a KNAX radio broadcast highlighted the celebration.
A large audience at St John’s Lutheran heard the Wartburg Lutheran Male Chorus of thirty four voices present their sacred concert. It was the eighth annual tour and praised as one of the finest presentations of its kind. The program was sung from memory without instrumentation and described as inspirational and spellbinding.
About 100 Wapsipinicon area Boy Scout leaders gather in a round table meeting at the Methodist church. Dinner at 6:30 precedes talks by Rev. Elmer Tiedt, Rev. John Clinton, and Rev. Clarence Oellke, with Dr J D Hemingway presenting a certificate of honor to Glen Mishler. Discussions on scout problems follow.
St Pauls Lutheran church forms an orchestra from its members to participate in church activities. First rehearsal set for Sunday April 10 at 4 00 p m. Miss Marjorie Grawe visiting from Minneapolis. Paul Gallagher home from Notre Dame for a week’s vacation.
Elmer Hirsch Everett McRoberts and Ted Knief of Waverly were arrested by Officer William Ducker Tuesday night in an intoxicated condition. Knief appeared before Mayor Osincup and chose a 15 day jail sentence or a three month exile from town. The others await sentences.
Herman Richman formerly of Tripoli and assistant clerk declares candidacy on the Democratic ticket for clerk. Glen Lundberg announces on the Republican ticket for reworder.
Military funeral services were held Monday March 28 for Arthur Hursh age 54 formerly of this place now of Nebraska where his body was shipped. He was a World War II veteran and unmarried. Burial took place in Harlington cemetery. Other local items note a shoulder injury to George Hazlett, births and visits, a mother's death in Lena, a St Paul church birthday party March 31, indictments in a Tripoli bank case, and local sports and civic notes.
Mr and Mrs Will Eichmann and Mr and Mrs Carl Drape traveled to Waterloo on Friday to spend the afternoon.
