Gifford Pinchot announces candidacy for Pennsylvania senator opposing incumbent David A Reed. He asserts as a Republican he will work with President Roosevelt to restore prosperity and avoid partisan bickering. The piece notes shifting party influence, mentions Spain's wine and tobacco trade, and Roosevelt’s proposal to consolidate national communications under federal oversight, dividing utilities into transportation, power, and communication.
At a Monday town council meeting the caucus system for nominating city officers was dropped in favor of petition nominations. Each candidate must be signed by at least 25 qualified residents and filed with the town clerk 15 days before the March 26 election. Mayor McCumber issued a proclamation calling the election.
Mr and Mrs John Koch entertained a small group on Wednesday February 28 to celebrate Mrs Kochs birthday. Guests included their son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Leslie Schmidt C H Schmidt and Mr and Mrs Frank Koch plus extended relatives and friends. The evening featured visiting games and a lunch served by the hostess with help from her daughter.
Ernest J. Seemann of Readlyn announced candidacy for the Democratic congressional nomination in the third district. A naval veteran (1920 1927) he backs cost of production as a minimum for farm products, a just wage scale for labor with employer consideration, compensation for veterans with service connected disabilities, and freedom of the press.
Formal notice lists county sheriff Frank Sager county attorney Fred Rewoldt county auditor H J Stumme county treasurer W C Hoth county recorder George Moulds and clerk of the district court H C Richmann as candidates for reelection on the democratic ticket at the June 1934 primary.
Funeral services for Mrs. Will Topp of Leroy Minnesota were held in St John’s Lutheran church with Rev C J Mardorf officiating. Interment in Lutheran cemetery. Born May 28 1885 in Sumner Iowa she died March 2 at 48 in Leroy. Survived by husband Garnet daughter four sisters and one brother. Her two sons Eugene and Willard preceded her in death.
In February 661 instruments were recorded in the county recorder George T. Moulds office, a large rise from 379 in February 1932. Fees collected totaled 334.35, up from 155.35 last year, and the surge has required longer daily hours.
Mrs L J Smith observed her 85th birthday on Friday March 2 with a quiet observance. Her son C H Smith and his wife visited from the city, her daughter Mrs Frank Hatch and husband with son Renald from Sumner, and friends called or sent greetings during the day.
Delmar Stange of C C C McGregor returned home Wednesday on a four day furlough to see his mother Mrs. Nan nie Stange and went back to McGregor Sunday.
Bremer county taxpayers in January and February paid 41 910 09 in taxes. Current taxes totaled 26 281 63 while delinquent taxes from 1932 and earlier reached 15 628 46. County Treasurer W C Hoth notes a 50 percent rise in delinquent tax collections versus last year and lists allocations to state and county funds.
Several families from the vicinity attended the housewarming at Mr. and Mrs. John Boeckman’s new home north of New Hampton on Sunday evening. Guests included the Ambrose, Bierman, Schmidt, Schumacher, Moeller, Schumacher, and Bierman families. Cards and visiting were enjoyed, with lunch served by the ladies. Mrs. Frank Holmes of Littleton accompanied the Ambrose family home and visited the Moellers.
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a regular meeting at the Legion hall on Tuesday evening March 13. All members are urged to attend to help plan the St Patrick program, quilt, and antique display to be presented at the Legion hall March 16.

Charles Wilson Bennett known as Will Bennett died at his Lovewell home on Saturday March 3 at 11 am after a recent stroke. He was 75 with 5 sons all in Kansas and survived by his widow Carrie Kimbal Bennett and three sisters including J F Keough. He was son of George and Zinthia Bennett, pioneer residents.
The Royal Neighbors met for their regular monthly meeting at their hall Tuesday evening March 6 with 26 members and one guest. A transfer ceremony moved Mrs Helmut Quandt from Sumner camp to Tripoli camp followed by initiation of Mrs Lee Scott and Mrs Harold Bierie as Tripoli members. Entertainment with St Patrick's Day games and stunts preceded a lunch served by hostesses to the thirty ladies present.
Announcement from Readlyn details the marriage of Lou Ella Meyer to Paul Boevers. Ceremony held December 26 1983 in Independence at Immanuel Lutheran church conducted by Rev A H Zeilinger. Attendants were W H Beevers and wife, siblings of the groom.
R. F. Schmidt of Denver, longtime Jefferson township assessor, announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Bremer county treasurer. He has business college training and four years of banking experience in Waterloo and Colorado, and lives on a small acreage at Denver.
Mr and Mrs William Jahnke celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Tuesday March 6 at their Old Town home. A six o clock dinner was hosted by their daughter and daughters in law with a large gathering of children grandchildren and relatives from Bremer Denver Waterloo Waverly Tripoli Frederika and Tri Pol i. A gold and green anniversary cake amid the decor marked the event which also coincided with their son Edward Jahnke and wife marking their tenth wedding anniversary. Neighbors and extended family came to offer greetings.
H W Krueger and W C Fergeman of Tripoli attended a Waverly meeting with Janesville Plainfield Shell Rock Nashua and Waverly to plan sustaining the Cedar Valley baseball league this summer. A follow up in Waverly March 12 and a Tripoli meeting March 8 at the town hall were set to rally fans and players. Local fans predict one of Tripoli’s best teams in years.
County board approved a resolution to issue 277000 in primary road refunding bonds with optional retirement after May 1 1934. Bids will be received March 26 with sale to the highest bidder. Bonds dated May 1 1934 will mature 55000 annually 1946 to 1949 and 57000 in 1950. Existing bonds with optional retirement dated August 1 1928 and October 1 1988 carry 44 percent and 442 percent interest respectively. State highway officials say the current market for refunding bonds is strong and many high interest bonds may be paid off via the new issue.
The Bremer County Taxpayers' League postpones its Monday meeting in Waverly, Iowa, with a new date to be announced. The group plans a public session before the primary to let all candidates discuss public questions and policies.
Mrs. Fred Hoerman, 56, of four miles southwest of the city, died Sunday at Mercy hospital after a short illness. Survived by husband Walter and Elmer, two sons and two daughters, Mrs Oscar Haefner and Mrs Milton Sickles of Waverly, four brothers Harm, William Ducker of this city August Ducker of Hardy Fred Ducker of Tripoli, two sisters Mrs John Brandt and Mrs Henry Pries of Waverly, and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Koch funeral home with Rev L O Walper officiating, burial in Harlington cemetery.
Mrs. William Quilling, 67, died Friday evening at her home in the city. Born in Germany in 1867 she came to America at age 20. She lived on a Bremer county farm before moving to town two years ago. Survived by husband, three daughters and two sons. Funeral Tuesday at home and at 1:30 p m at Missouri Synod Lutheran church, Rev. L O Walper officiating. Burial in Harlington cemetery.
Frank A. Holloway, a Rock Island railroad brakeman and conductor for 43 years, retires due to ill health. Starting at age 18, he never had an accident or a demerit. He long served Cedar Rapids to Minneapolis, later Burlington to Albert Lea. He will receive a lifetime pension.
Bonnie Jean Davis four months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Davis died at her parents home Saturday born October 21 1934 She is survived by her parents and several brothers and sisters Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Kaiser funeral home Rev Giles Sharpley of St Andrew's Episcopal church officiating and the child was laid to rest in Harlington cemetery
Dr M O Brye and Miss Lydia Umsted of this city wed Sunday February 25 in Cresco Iowa with Rev H M Normann officiating. Attendants were Dr and Mrs A Tosten of Decorah. A reception followed at the Tosten home.
