The Fulton Market in Chicago leases the front of the J. A. Nienhaus garage to launch a buying station handling poultry eggs and cream this week. M. G. Rea of Sumner, former Wescott and Winks employee, will be local manager.
Waverly veteran journalist Joseph F. Grawe died at his home after a brief illness. A Civil War veteran, he spent 57 years in Chickasaw and Bremer county publishing, owning Nashua Post, Bremer County Independent Republican and Waverly papers. He was named Master Editor Publisher by the Iowa Press Association in 1932.
Waverly residents will gain about $5,000 as the electric light committee of the city council canceled bills due March 1 for readings Feb 15 to 20. Committee members are W A Watkins Charles Ducker and Harry Hicks. The council plans to sign a diesel engines contract with Iowa Public Service Co before March 10 and set a lower rate schedule after April 1. County supervisors approved township road improvements totaling 56 1/2 miles per Willard Chapman’s plan.
Geneva Bunger nine year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Bunger of near Tri poli died at Osnes hospital Readlyn on Monday February 27 after a week long illness following an appendectomy. She was born September 2 1923 and was 9 years 5 months 24 days old. Survived by her parents one sister Darlyl six grandparents and other relatives. Funeral Friday March 3 at home and at St Matthews Lutheran church Readlyn Rev Meyer officiating burial in church cemetery.
Janesville High School captured the Bremer county championship by beating Denver 38 to 32 in the final. Consolation saw Frederika defeat Tripoli 31 to 20. Tournament results list preliminaries Denver 23 Sumner 7 Tripoli 25 Plainfield 22 Janesville 29 Waverly 17. Semis Denver 29 Tripoli 20 Janesville 27 Frederika 20. Consolation Frederika 31 Tripoli 20. Finals Janesville 88 Denver 32.
A pretty wedding was held at the bride’s parents home on Thursday February 23 at 2 PM. Miss Emma Rathe and John Moeller united in matrimony with Rev. C Meyer officiating. Marie Meyer played Lohengrin’s wedding march. Attendants included maid of honor Carrie Moeller and best man Louie Rathe. The bride wore white flat crepe with carnation boutonnières and a long illusion veil. A reception for nearest relatives followed. The newlyweds will farm on a Lafayette township property Jack Moeller’s family home.
At a Thursday school caucus Frese and Goodenbour were chosen to run for three year terms on the school board. The election will be held Monday March 13.
The Royal Neighbors will meet at their hall Tuesday evening March 7. A large attendance is expected and all officers should attend as the Sumner camp will be entertained as guests. After the business session the evening will be social with refreshments served by a committee.
Nashua high school swept nine first places across declamatory divisions at contests in Nashua Tripoli and Fredericksburg earning 45 points to 25 and 11 for the other schools. Tripoli and Fredericksburg officials claimed multiple second and third places while Cedar Falls and Waverly also posted top finishes in regional prelims. Despite elimination from the state event local speakers delivered a strong showing against larger schools.
The list of trial jurors drawn for the March 1933 term of district court includes Art Sohle of Waverly and a large slate of residents from Tripoli Sumner Waverly Denver and Fredericksburg among others. Names include L N Cummings John Henning Bernard Rossel Elston Chapin and many more. The jurors hail from multiple towns including Waverly Tripoli Sumner Denver and Fredericksburg.
Earl Matthiesen of Denver has stayed two weeks at the home of his grandparents Mr and Mrs W H Tegtmeier while assisting Leo Droste on his paper route following the latter's accident.
Waverly relatives learned of Martha Rittman death in Spokane Washington. Born here she was daughter of S H Curtis and Mrs Curtis. Survived by husband brother and sister here. Funeral held in Spokane after body arrived. Frank Ritter 54 died at Wakdale sanitarium of tuberculosis. Burial in Harlington cemetery. Survived by sister Hattie Babcock, brother Will, and son John.
Chris Hirsch appeared before Justice M M Kingsley on illegal possession and transportation of liquor charges. He was bound over on a 500 appearance bond for a preliminary hearing set for March 3. Officers Bill Ducker and Bert Fowler arrested him after a northwest city car chase. the car contained several full and empty liquor bottles.
Friends of Miss Anna Sullivan, formerly of this city, have been advised and invited to attend exercises at George Washington University in Washington DC where she will be awarded her Master’s degree. Sullivan taught locally for several years and at Glenwood school for the feeble minded before her Washington appointment.
The body of Amy Hunt Renken, former city resident, was brought here for burial in Harlington cemetery after dying at her home in Evans ton Illinois. J C Penny visited en route from Waterloo to Mason City, staying a night in Waterloo and meeting Waverly store staff. Mrs P A Fossellmann was called to Waterloo for the illness and death of her sister Mrs Margaret Fox, 69. Paul Shader became business manager of Sentinel News at Hoxie Kansas and left for new duties. Margaret Donovan returned from a winter in Oklahoma City. John Sager Jr. is critically ill with flu. daughter Emma Barry of Belmond assists. Ruth Nolte returned to duties after an appendectomy.
