A summer recreation program opens next Monday in Tripoli for youngsters, with activities split by age groups at Town Park and Ball Park. The schedule includes baseball, crafts, croquet, swimming, storytelling, and tournaments, with possible additions like soft ball and hiking.
Wapsie Sportsmen's club will hold Kid's Fish Day on Sunday June 24 at Tot's Lake near Tripoli. The event invites youths up to 15 to compete for prizes with bullheads as the main target and game fish also present. Each attendee will receive a free treat. full rules will appear in The Leader next week.
A full set of new chancel furniture will be dedicated at St Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Sunday morning worship. Rev E F Puhlmann will lead with guest speaker Rev Inst Press of the Iowa Synod delivering The Threefold Message of the Church.
Funeral services for Mrs. Olmstead were held Monday at Mrs E W Methodist church for a Wednesday burial. She leaves three sons, Dewey, Ted, and William, and a husband. The family resided in Casaer, with relatives in Africa.
Services were held for Jean Marie Steinbronn 22 at Matthias Funeral Home Denver and St. Pauls Ev Lutheran Artesian after she died Friday from injuries from a Tuesday fall from a horse. She was daughter of Mr and Mrs William Steinbronn formerly of a farm north west of Tripoli. Leslie Lauck owner of Tripoli Hardware Tripoli Iowa has been named Iowa Hardware Retailer of the Year by the National Retail Hardware Association in the Hardware Week Retailer of the Year contest. He will receive a cash award and a certificate for outstanding promotional achievement. the award will be presented by Philip R. Jacobson Iowa Retail Hardware association secretary. Hundreds of contest entries were judged in New York by a panel of eight editors from national merchandising and advertising publications.
Tripoli and vicinity endured a spell of summer heat with temperatures reaching 90 degrees on Sunday and Monday and staying in the 80s. A single shower measured .28 inch last Thursday offered minimal relief while crops largely remain in good condition though oats may suffer without more rain. Nighttime cooling to 55 aided sleep as farmers call for general rainfall.
The Tripoli and Frederika communities launch a six week swimming program by the Red Cross starting Monday. Lessons for Tripoli run 10:30 to 11:10 am on Monday and Thursday, with transport by school bus. Frederika sessions are 10:30 to 11:10 am Tuesday and Friday. Registration is June 16 in Tripoli and ongoing at Farmers Savings Bank in Frederika. children must be seven by June 18 and have parental consent. A $2 transportation fee applies. pool use is free.
Tripoli horses performed well in the season opening card at Independence Sunday. Ragtime owned by Walter Sommer took second in one race and Golden Jack, also Sommer’s, finished third in another. Hay of Tripoli campowned horses earned two thirds. Jockeys Dale Schmidt and Gaede, both of Tripoli, rode. Next action is Sunday at the Allison Fair grounds with a 2 p.m. first race.
Emma Redemann 82 died Sunday in a Waterloo hospital after an extended illness. Funeral services are set for 2 p m tomorrow at Rettig Funeral home with Rev. L E Gatch officiating. Burial in Fremont cemetery with casket bearers including Wm Krueger H W Krueger E H Stehn M W Bennett Will Gebert and H J Frese. Born November 8 1873.
Julia McDonald 80 died Sunday at Woodlawn Convalescent Home Waterloo from old age complications. A lifelong Frederika resident she served as church organist and participated in Methodist activities. Services were at the Frederika Methodist Church with Rev. Edwin Boulton. burial Alcock Cemetery. Rettig Funeral Home Tripoli handled arrangements. She was born July 23 1875 in Douglas township. survived by many nephews and nieces.
Five directors and a treasurer for the newly formed Denver Community School district were elected Monday with 295 votes cast. New directors are William Buss Melvin Judas for one year Donald Sage and Lorenz E Steege for two years Alvin Sassmann for three years Victor Schweer elected treasurer for two years. The district goes into effect July 1.
Last rites were conducted Friday at Matthias Funeral Home for Herman Brummund 72 who died Tuesday last week of a heart attack at his sister's home. He was born in Germany Sept 26 1883 and farmed in Bremer county before moving to Denver. Survived by sister Mrs. Carl Buss Denver.
John H. Patton a 55 year old Los Angeles resident was fatally injured and his wife was hospitalized with cuts when their car collided with a meat truck just north of the junction of Highways 63 and 188 northwest of here. The meat truck driver Thomas Benson 21 of Elgin escaped injury. It is believed Patton lost control causing the car to veer into the truck’s path.
A Readlyn fire department special meeting adjourned quickly as a fire broke out at the Reinhardt Beevers farm. Water-hauling farmers joined in, and the roof blaze was contained within minutes before cause was known.
The Tripoli Public Library will not be open on Thursday and Saturday afternoons during June July and August. It will remain open on Monday and Saturday nights as usual.
Tripoli’s Red Sox seek to hold third place in Cedar Valley as Readlyn visits for a Sunday 2 15 p m game after both teams edged toward 2-2 records. Denver and Readlyn also posted wins as Sumner topped Denver 4-0 and Readlyn beat Janesville in a ninth inning rally.
David Breeze of Paw Paw NL has been retained by the Bremer County Extension Council as youth assistant in the Extension office for the summer. He is a senior at Iowa State College Ames and will graduate after one more quarter. Breeze works with Extension Director Doyle Gordon, returns to college September 8, lives in Tripoli this summer, and has a room in the E C Biermann building.
E H Kuker underwent surgery Saturday morning at Scholtz Memorial Hospital Waterloo. His condition is stated as satisfactory.
Readlyn Public School announced final honor roll and perfect attendance awards. Students on the honor roll include seniors Edna Bast Carol Handrich Robert Meyerhoff Joyce Piehl Hermann Rinkloff and others across all grades. Attendance awards honored seniors Robert Meyerhoff Doris Oltrogge Doris Poock Hermann Rinkloff and juniors Mary Huebner Shirley Lobeck among sophomores Carol Tiedt Alice Salisbury Roberta Meyerhoff Eloyce Farrill and freshmen LaRue Dettmering Alice Fortsch Karen Hagenow Myrna Lockard Francis Merrill Margaret Meyerhoff Mary Zander.
Interstate Power Co sponsors a free baking demonstration at its offices on Saturday with free coffee and cookies for attendees. The event begins hourly at 1 p.m. and includes a free baked ham giveaway announced by manager E. H. Stehn.
Tripoli Commercial club will sponsor two events for June Dairy Month. Bremer county's Golden Girl will be chosen in a 17 to 22 female contestants contest, winner gets 25 dollars. County winner advances to August state contest at Waverly for a 500 dollar scholarship. Drawing for 325 dollars in merchandise prizes follows the queen contest. Band concert starts 7:30 p.m. with queen contest around 8:30.
St John Ey Lutheran church Maxfield township marks 100 years since its 1856 founding with weekend services starting Wednesday and culminating Sunday. A German festival service, two main jubilees, dinner, homecoming, and greetings from pastor and visiting clergy comprise the commemorations. The church reports 1495 baptisms 809 confirmations 342 weddings and 366 burials through its century. It lists numerous area Lutheran churches tracing origin to St John.
An outdoor telephone booth was installed Tuesday by Butler-Bremer Mutual Telephone Co. for transient callers. It sits at the southwest corner of the Hasbrouck Voetmann Lumber Co. building along Highway 93.
