The two teams contend for second place behind Denver as the season progresses. Tripoli and Sumner each have added wins after opening losses, with Tripoli coming off a loss to Denver and Sumner rebounding from early setbacks. The locals show strong hitting and opportunistic scoring as they clash for pivotal league standings.
Fans at the local diamond will enjoy a new grandstand roof installed Saturday by players and supporters. The prior roof was blown off in a windstorm last summer, leaving fans exposed to the sun. The roof repair ends a long, hot wait for comfort at Sunday’s game.
Tripoli zeroed in with a 3-0 edge by the fourth, then held Janesville to three more runs as Sassman and Moeller led Tripoli with multi hit games. Spier top scored for Janesville with three of four while Poock and two Red Sox errors aided the visitors. Denver beat Readlyn 6-2 and Sumner crushed Waverly 13-0 in other league games with Readlyn plagued by five errors and Waverly missing players due to illness.
Wed 5. Years Mr and Mrs W C Moeller observed their 50th wedding anniversary May 27 with a family dinner at the farm home near Readlyn where he was born and open house at their Readlyn residence. They wed May 23 1906 at Spring Fountain Lutheran church. Four daughters Art Melba Herman Buck Creek Leslie Erna Sell Sumner Art Esther Andrews Oelwein and Keith McMillan Iowa Falls. Fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Newly formed Cub Scouts of Denver held their first Pack meeting May 31 at St. Peter's Lutheran church basement. Boys earned Bobcat pins including Jerry Bartels and many others. Wolf badges went to five scouts. Bear badge awarded to Gary Konarske. Denner strips presented to four Scouts.
Tri poli announces a local summer band program led by instructor Janice Garrison. The city band will meet each Monday at 7 30 p m with the first concert slated for next Tuesday at 8 p m. Lessons are arranged and students should attend the designated band room days unless notified. Twirlers will be informed of meetings.
Readlyn special: Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lee observed their 50th wedding anniversary with a May 30 family dinner. They wed May 31, 1906 in Gallatin Missouri and moved from Locksprings to Waterloo in 1922. They have three sons and four daughters, 29 grandchildren, one great grandchild. one son Howard died in 1944. Attendees included multiple Lee families from Readlyn Waterloo Nashua Evansdale and Greeley Colorado. two children Francis Navy California and Robert Readlyn were absent.
Tripoli will host its first Egg and Poultry Carnival likely on Friday August 17. The one day event honors the town’s principal industry and will feature displays, contests, tours, a tractor rodeo, rides, a ball game and a street dance. Planning is led by Elmer Wilharm with P L Crittenden Ed Biesterfelt Leonard Siegel and LeLand Bergmann. Announcement of the program will follow.
Three persons sustained injuries in a two car collision near the junction of Highways 63 and 93 west of here. A Waterloo woman, Mrs. Kenneth Bernald, 31, was hospitalized at Scholtz Memorial hospital with the most serious injuries. Her 7 year old daughter Patricia had a facial cut while Jerry Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Meyer, suffered a head cut. The accident involved a car driven by Mrs. Bernard's husband hitting the rear of a car driven by Rev. W. D. Weidler pastor of St John Evangelical and Reformed church Siegel as it turned into the Meyer driveway. The Meyer boy was a passenger in the Weidler car.
Regular American Legion auxiliary meeting set for Town hall next Tuesday at 8 p m. Main order of business is the election of officers. Hostesses are Hazel Chapin Pearl Buechele and Emma Kelsey. Ronald Krause of Bowdle S D spent Memorial Day with the William Schlichting home.
Over 500 attended Grace Church Children’s Day worship and the program The Children of the Church by Vacation Bible School pupils and staff. Among 138 enrolled, 120 earned perfect attendance certificates while teachers received certificates of appreciation. An annual picnic followed at Tripoli Park with committee members named for planning.
Eugene Oltrogge of Tripoli earned a spring sports letter in wrestling as part of 37 Wartburg athletes awarded letters this week.
The Boy Scouts will hold a paper drive Saturday with curbside pickup by 9 a.m. Scouts meet at Farmers Produce Co. at 8 45 a.m.
Dr C R Barry announces the office will be closed from June 11 to June 24 for a leave. The message notes a personal break and provides no additional scheduling details.
Mrs. Emma Klemp 78 died June 2 at her son’s Rockford home. Funeral Tuesday at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Readlyn with Rev. Dornbusch officiating. Burial in church cemetery. Survived by two sons Raymond and Elmer. eight grandchildren. two great grandchildren. siblings Sophie Sack Anna Schneider Mary Cranfield Herman Breitsprecher.
In May Rudolph Piegers fined Allen Buenger of Tripoli five dollars plus costs for making an unnecessary disturbance with a car. Russell Elmer Meyer of Hawk Eye was fined ten dollars plus costs for careless driving. Each charge information was filed by Town Marshal Ed Bany.
Tripoli hosts the Bremer County Golden Girl contest Saturday June 23 to select a queen for June Dairy Month. About 325 in merchandise prizes will be drawn with windows display at Block and Klemp Plumbing. Contestants must be Iowa residents age 17 to 22, single, with good health and no modeling career, winner advancing to the state contest at Waverly in August.
H H Hoppenworth a Fremont township farmer won the Republican nomination for county supervisor from the second district in the primary, with 240 votes to Elmer Sassmann 133. Incumbent Conrad F Heide man held the Democratic nomination and will oppose Hoppenworth in November. Voting was light as fair weather kept farm families home for spring work.
Tripoli fans will attend the first horse racing action of the season Sunday at the Independence Fairgrounds. The full card starts at 2 p m and the Iowa Thoroughbred Horse Racing Association sponsors the program with Walter Sommer of Tripoli serving as secretary, along with local entrants expected.
The listing includes F. L. McAlpine treasurer, Mary Cretzmeyer Loucks clerk of court, H. E. Ehlert sheriff, John Sperry recorder, H. H. Cleve land coroner, Guy Gates state representative, Joe Roose Alli son state senator, and Micich representative in Congress.
Denver voters will elect a five member school board and a two year treasurer for the newly formed Denver Community School district. Candidates include Wm Buss Melvin Judas Woodrow Klemp Ernest Walter Ralph Ebaugh Walter Meyne Wilson Milius Donald Sage Lorenz Fe Steege Lavern Wente Robert Henning Alvin Sass and Victor Schweer. Polls at Denver Town Hall open 12 noon to 7 pm.
The St Peters Youth Fellowship sponsors a car wash on Saturday June 9 starting at 9 am. Cars are cleaned for $1 each to support the group. Come prepared for your weekend trip with a clean vehicle.
The Tripoli chapter of the American Red Cross will publish details of this summer's youth swimming program next week in The Leader. Chapter president Geo. Lindsley announced the delay and upcoming print date.
