Burning ceremonies at Grace Church Sunday

Grace Church Tripoli announces a mortgage burning ceremony on Sunday June 6 at 10:00 a.m. during worship. Rev Arnold Thalacker says the event marks 12 years of building work toward the church’s 1953 enlargement and retirement of nearly $100,000. Karl Schmidt of Ig College will speak. Wm Goetz served as pastor during the project and suffered a heart attack.

Legion To Sponsor Free Car Safety Check June 12

The American Legion post will sponsor a free car safety check on Saturday June 12 from to 9 p m at the east side of City Park. Cars passing safety checks will receive safety stickers and owners may have needed repairs carried out at low cost. License numbers will be listed for a drawing of donated prizes from Denver firms. Hagemann of Waverly reports Bremer county sales in April of series E and H bonds reaching 59,523 dollars. National total for the first four months rises 621 thousand dollars, achieving 33 percent of the quota.

Rain dampened turnout as five youngsters from Tripoli, Sumner, and surrounding areas lined up for three bicycles and two $25 U S bonds. Winners include Charles Heinemann Lori Boeckmann Wayne Kuhl David Bon Ricky Hann. Eligible entrants were 12 years old or younger.

Final Rites Tuesday For Harold Frese Former Resident Here

Harold Frese 53 a former Tripoli resident died May 29 of a heart attack at home in Martinsdale He was principal and band leader for nine years and superintendent the past school year in Martinsdale school system Previously he was a music instructor at Tripoli High School He was born July 14 1911 and attended Tripoli schools earning a music degree from Teachers College Cedar Falls Funeral services were held Tuesday in Martinsdale High School auditorium Rev Glen Lamb and Rev Harold Butts officiated Burial was in Menlo He is survived by his widow Alice two sons Jerry Mount Pleasant Joseph Santa Clara Cal a daughter Judy Woolsey Santa Clara three grandchildren and a sister

Gas rate cut set for Iowa by Peoples Natural Gas Division

Des Moines reports that starting July 1 Iowa communities served by Northern Natural Gas Company Peoples Division will see a 15 percent discount on gas bills for air conditioning from June through September. Total annual Iowa savings approximately 115000 dollars, with wider reductions planned in 43 communities. The move aligns with Commerce Commission efforts for uniform rates across Iowa.

Apprehend Youths For Shoplifting At Denver Store

Five Waterloo youths about 18 were apprehended after stealing three transistor radios and other merchandise from Wittenburg Hardware in Denver. Two bystanders noted the car license as the youths fled in a hurry. the theft was reported to the highway patrol after the store owner confirmed the loss.

In a two car crash north of Waterloo on Highway 63 Gregory Steege of Denver escaped injury while H A Buhman 82 and his passenger Mrs Maggie B Wheeler 82 of Waterloo were hospitalized. Both vehicles were totaled.

Tripoli Summer Recreation Program Starts June 15

Tripoli announces a summer recreation program for arts and crafts for first through eighth graders. Sessions run Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 15 through August 3 with morning 9:00 to 11:30 at West elementary and afternoon 1:00 to 3:00 at South Park. Mary Anderson leads, assisted by Cal Schnieders and Jan Davidson. Registration is 25 cents per child due on the first day.

Tripoli fire department personnel will play the Tripoli Commercial Club members in a benefit softball game on June 25. Richard Buhr, fire chief, says proceeds will buy needed firefighting equipment. Advance ticket sales will begin soon.

Selected Service in County Grossed 2.3 Million in 1963

Bremer county reported 141 service establishments with receipts of 2.3 million dollars in 1963, up 96 percent from 1958. The county employed 114 workers with a 408 thousand dollar payroll. The Iowa state total included 17,357 establishments and 403.5 million in receipts.

First Band Concert Set for Tuesday at High School

The first band concert of the summer season will be held on Tuesday June 8 at 8 00 p m at the High School main entrance under James Tjaden. The Women's Fellowship will serve an ice cream social at 7 00 p m. Other concert dates are June 22 July 6 and July 20. The final concert will be tied to Poultry and Egg days.

Denver officials announce eight week summer band lessons starting the week of June 7 on Mondays and Tuesdays for all current band members and 5th to 7th graders. Marilyn Borcherding of Sumner will join 99 Iowa 4-H members at the State 4-H conservation workshop near Madrid July will learn soil water and wildlife principles and leadership. David Foster of Waverly attends Health Camp at Hickory Village with theme Personal Public and Community Health. Both were chosen by the county 4-H awards and selection committee for educational trips through 4-H club work.

Douglas Hale age 22 named local manager for Peoples Natural Gas in Tripoli effective June 1. He transfers from Guttenberg after 18 months with the company and will relocate his wife Denise and six month old Jason once housing is secured. Former manager Dale Trent moves to a storekeeper role in Dubuque.
