Fre mont woman suffers fall and vertebrae crush
Mrs Clarence Ganske of Fremont township returned home Saturday after a two week stay in Allen Memorial hospital. She suffered a crushed vertebrae when she fell carrying clothes up basement stairs on July 2. She will wear a specially fitted brace for about two months.

Frederick Drewis to Join Air Defense Maneuvers
Private Frederick E. Drewis from Tripoli will take part in Operation Signpost, a one week air defense exercise July 19 to 28 in Boston. He serves with the 56th Anti Aircraft Artillery Brigade as a gun loader in Battery A of the 16th AAA Gun Battalion. Enlisted in November 1951, he is the son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Drewis.

Local Youths Save Man From Carbon Monoxide Death
Four youths swimming along the Wapsie near Tripoli heard a car running at high speed and found Floyd Mettlin slumped behind the wheel in a car with a hose in the exhaust. They pulled him free, aided by bystanders, and he was rushed to an Oelwein hospital where doctors said he was recovering. Mettlin, 55, had planned to end his life, saying things had been breaking badly, but the swimmers arrived in time to avert tragedy.

Funeral Services Held Tuesday for Mrs John Henning
Funeral services for Caroline Haase Henning 67 were held Tuesday July 15 at Meier's funeral home and St Peter's Evangelical church. Rev Theo Blauffuss officiated with interment at St Peter's cemetery. She died July 12 after a stroke following a year of declining health. Survivors include husband John and daughters Elizabeth Buhr and Mildred Bockhaus plus six grandchildren and two brothers and two sisters.
