Hog Price Outlook and Cattle Market Outlook This Summer
Farm Economist Francis Kutish of Iowa State University forecasts hog prices this summer near 16 to 17 dollars per hundredweight, with more pork in cold storage and a 1 percent rise in the spring pig crop. Fall prices should be similar to last fall, with early winter about the same or slightly lower. Also noted is potential cattle market improvement by July or August and advisability to place cattle in feed lots for fall sale.

Rose and vegetable feeding tips from a weekly garden column
County Extension Director Gene Vincent shares seasonal advice from Iowa State University horticulture expert Ben Vance. Feed roses now with 10-10-10 fertilizer, mulch is adjusted, water if rainfall is under an inch per week, and pest spray every 7 days. Vegetables still need light feeding with ammonium nitrate, avoiding leaf contact. Prune and burn old raspberry canes after harvest to reduce disease.
