Governor Ignores Ruling on No Vacancies in Iowa Appointments
Attorney General Evan Hultman ruled interim appointments by Governor Harold Hughes illegal since no vacancies exist as Senate did not confirm successors. Hughes says the two appointees Robert Barry and Corbin Crawford will take office July 1, with Crawford to replace Walter Conway on the Board of Control. Republican Senate had blocked confirmation earlier.

Three Republicans face commission eligibility question in Iowa
June 30 report notes Robert Keir of Spencer Jo Stong Keosauqua and William Nicholas Clear Lake may seek to remain on the commission under Hultman’s ruling. Any one of the three could stay in office. Kier or Stong might challenge the governor’s action by bond. Hughes says the matter will be resolved by courts.
