Waverly attorney Oliver J. Reeve, 45, announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for United States Senator. A former Bremer County Attorney and early political rise, he pledges to cut federal expenditures and channel crop surpluses to aid overseas, aiming to stabilize markets and aid farmers.
The Wapsie Area Council of the Boy Scouts chose Wakota as the new name for one of its six districts. The Bremer district was renamed after Nashua joined the former Bremer county area, reflecting two rivers Cedar and Wapsipinicon. A shield-shaped patch features a gold field, red border, two blue river lines, and a central Indian chief symbolizing the Sac, Fox, and Iowx tribes.
Mrs C A Stewart enters Jen Memorial hospital Water Tuesday afternoon for a medical checkup.
Mrs. Herman Moeller 73 died Friday at her farm home near Tripoli after a heart attack. Survived by husband, three sons Leslie Charles City John Waverly Lawrence Readlyn, and four daughters plus 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday at Rettig Funeral Home Tripoli and St. Peter's Church. Burial in church cemetery. Pallbearers named. Born February 2 1886 in Douglas township. Married June 16 1914 and lived on a farm north of Tripoli 45 years.
An adult farmer meeting is scheduled for Monday January 25 at 8 p.m. in Tripoli High School. Guest speaker Harvey Condoit will discuss the pros and cons of farrowing versus feeder pig raising, outlining economic labor and equipment considerations.
Tripoli Woman's Club will meet in the Tripoli Town Hall Wednesday January 27 at 7 30 p m. The program Lady Driver will be presented by Mrs L J magnall and Ruby Servoss will be hostess.
The Grace Lutheran Church annual meeting Friday elected Raymond H. Bunger chairman for one year. Officers for three year terms include Ernest Haase Hollis Niemeyer Fred Deterding LeLand Bergmann Larry Vogt and Arnold Westendorf. Delegates A. F. Eichmann and R. O. Wikner reported financials with $10,000 paid toward an $80,000 bond and a remaining $32,400 to be paid in three years. The budget of $13,590.78 for 1960 was approved.
The Potter Siding Creamery Co. calls its annual meeting at Tripoli Town Hall on Tuesday February 2 1960 at 7 30 p m. Secretary W H Kallenbach requests attendance.
Trustees announce a combined auction of assets from Farmers Produce Company at Tripoli Clarion and related plants to be held Thursday January 28 at 10 o’clock in the U S District Court Waterloo. Properties include poultry and egg pickup facilities land buildings and machinery across locations in Tripoli Clarion Denver and Waterloo with inspection by appointment January 25 26 and 27.
Janet Frank of West Union, niece of L. H. Fink of Tripoli, is a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. The group will tour February 1 to March 13 and perform Bach Mass in B minor at Knights gymnasium in Waverly on February 15. The Des Moines Register notes her in the chorus of Berlioz’s opera, with plans to record Mass in B minor in New York after the tour.
Mr and Mrs Walter Buls celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house at St John s Evangelical and Reformed church Siegel attended by about 200 guests from Waterloo Waverly Sumner Fairfield Cedar Rapids and Clutter A 5 p m family dinner preceded the 7 to 9 p m open house at the family home with 50 attendees
World War I Veterans and the Ladies Auxiliary of Bremer county will hold a joint meeting at the American Legion hall Wa verly on Thursday January 21 at 8 pm. Charters open after the meeting and only paid up members will have their names listed. All veterans and their wives are invited. Lunch will be served. Arthur Sassmann is county commander.
Winter storms swept the Midwest with heavy snowfall in Iowa. Tripoli recorded 3.6 inches by Saturday and 6.6 inches after a second storm, yet temps stayed milder than forecast and roads remained passable. Schools near Tripoli closed Monday but buses ran and attendance stayed near normal. A 6 above reading Sunday night gave way to colder temps Tuesday with little relief foreseen.
Tripoli is placed in the Waterloo bracket for the Class A sectional basketball tournament with a first round against the winner of Janesville Don Bosco. Denver battles Teachers High at Waterloo, while Waverly hosts Shell Rock Plainfield and Fredericksburg Clarksville Nashua and the winners meet for advancing to the state finals. The Waterloo winner meets the Waverly bracket winner for a spot in the state tournament.
County Assessor Wm J Kelling will be at the Tripoli Town Hall Monday through Friday of next week and again on February 1 for area residents. Sign up for homestead and veterans exemptions if eligible. Appointments are by date. all residents must appear at one of the listed dates whether cards arrive. Kelling was in Readlyn the first three days of this week.
The Local E and R Church held its annual congregational meeting Sunday with Clarence Kimbal presiding. Reports from officers and organizations covered 1959 activities and a 1960 budget of 19,228 dollars, plus a two year 775 dollar pledge to support three seminaries. Newly elected and retiring council members were announced and organists for 1960 approved.
A Civil Service examination to select qualified applicants for the rural carrier position in Waterloo is set for Saturday January 23 at Gates Business College. The test begins at 9:39 a.m. Three top finishers will be placed on the eligible register from which the carrier will be chosen. Results typically follow several months later.
The Tripoli Commercial Club voted to shift the annual meeting from February to November each year. The 1960 meeting will be Feb 15, with future meetings in November to align committees before the new year. Officers and directors will be elected Feb 5, and a nominating committee was named. The dinner at Town Hall was hosted by the Women’s Guild of St. Peter’s church.
Mrs Hulda Hesse of Waterloo and former Tripoli resident underwent surgery Sunday at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
A public joint installation service for new officers of the Masons and O E S will be held at the Masonic Hall in Sumner on Saturday evening at 7 30. Members and friends are invited to attend.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Westendorf moved Saturday to the home they recently purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Struckmann.
Wapsie Sportsmen's Club will hold its annual meeting at Tripoli Town Hall on Tuesday January 26. A free turkey dinner with all the trimmings will be served from 7 to 8 p.m. to those paying 1960 dues that night. Call secretary Kenneth Kuhrt before January 23 to attend if card not yet resolved. Les Faber of the State Conservation Commission will be the speaker. The meeting includes the annual election of officers.
Mrs. Fred Brase came home Sunday afternoon from Allien Hospital, marking her release after treatment.
The Tripoli Panthers lost 61 to 53 in boys action as Drewis fouled out late, while the Tripoli girls won 46 to 40 in a defensive battle. Edwards scored 23 and Heussner 27 for Fredericksburg, with Tripoli's Tessmer and Cahey leading the scoring for the visitors.
In a conference night, Wapsie Valley beat Plainfield 4 to 4 with Jerry Gehrke scoring 15 for Wapsie and Dave Faber leading Plainfield with 18. Plainfield girls then defeated Wapsie Valley 41 to 38 to climb out of the league cellar. Tripoli prepares for two home conference games next week against Janesville and Denver as both boys and girls teams host.
