Voters rejected a 130000 dollar bond issue for a 9000 square foot addition to Tripoli Junior-Senior High School by 266 to 61 in a Tuesday special election. The plan would have added a shop art room and labs, remodeled shop space for wrestling and storage, with future action pending school board study and possibly another vote after six months.
In Bremer county seven schools served 720 105 lunches during the 1967 school year. Tripoli city school ranked third with Waverly Shell Rock and Walley high schools among the top. Adults fed totaled 10 833 with various incomes and expenditures reported for each district. Government commodities distributed and total county costs for storage and refrigeration are noted alongside federal reimbursements for milk and meals.
Local social notes list visits and callers across Waterloo and Tripoli. Names include Mrs. Les Bock, Mrs. Sophia Wallace, Mrs. Stanley Gehrke, Mrs. Margaret Curry Heine, Mrs. Dor o, Mrs. Erwin Brase, and Mr. Wente along with several Buchholz and Biermann households visiting relatives and neighbors.
Regular Tripoli Jaycees gathering planned for Thursday January 11 at 8 p m in the V F W meeting room. Members are advised to attend and discuss club activities and plans.
Regular meeting of the Jaycee wives is set for Monday evening January 15 at the home of Mrs Vern Bolte.
Bremer County Assessor Wm. Kelling announces visitation dates in Frederika Readlyn and Tripoli for home stead credits veterans exemptions and dog licenses. Personal property assessments coincide. The Tri poli Commercial Club appointed 1968 committees at a special meeting. Directors include Duane Holm president and Howard Marquardt vice president with others listed. Committee heads are named by the first listed member for each group. Christmas decorations will be taken down January 11 at 7.
Bremer County Clerk of Court Lois Slater releases 1967 transactions showing total receipts of $83,809.08 and disbursements of $81,416.74, with inheritance taxes peaking at $90,761.21. Yearly comparisons list marriages 170, births 345, deaths 202, and various case types, fines, and passports issued.
One hundred forty people attended the football banquet in the Tripoli Town Hall sponsored by the Tripoli Commercial Club. Guest speaker Duane Josephson catcher for the Chicago White Sox spoke on his big league life. Eldon Ott presented the team and honored individual recipients. Duane Holm presided as master of ceremonies.
Des Moines reports that Robert Ray, a Republican candidate for Iowa governor in 1968, announced his bid and named three campaign leaders. Co-chairs are H Rand Petersen of Harlan and Elmer H Vermeer of Pella, with Petersen a former district GOP chair and Vermeer a longtime agriculture advocate. Campaign coordinator is Dr. Harry C Rasdal of Marshalltown, leaving his optometry practice full time for the race.
The Tripoli Commercial Club schedules a Monday evening gathering on January 15. A 7:00 dinner is served by Grace Lutheran church ladies, followed by an 8:00 business meeting. Ray Bunger is secretary for reservations and new officers elected in November begin their terms.
Walter Kuker was taken to Allen Memorial hospital in Waterloo on Monday after suffering a stroke at home. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schultz returned from a holiday trip to Phoenix visiting their son and also spent a few days in San Diego California.
The Fredericksburg community school board will hold a special meeting Monday January 15 at 8 15 p m in the high school building. It will act on petitions seeking sale of up to $340 000 in bonds to fund construction additions to the high and grade schools in Fredericksburg.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at St John’s Evangelical and Reformed church Siegel for Henry Korte 90 who died Saturday morning at the Tripoli Nursing Home Rev W D Weidler presided with burial in the church cemetery Casket bearers were Richard Hoppenworth Marvin Hoppenworth Merle Hoppenworth Leon Korte Mark Bull and Gary Hoppenworth Honorary bearer James Biesterfelt He is survived by five daughters Mrs Erwin Hoppenworth Mrs Herb Miller Mrs Fred Biesterfelt Mrs Arlon Bull all of Tripoli and Mrs James Casey Vinton a sister Mrs Frieda Reith Waverly.
The 1965 law signed by President Johnson boosts checks for about 3,260 residents in Bremer County and nationwide. Automatic increases apply with checks arriving March 2, and many beneficiaries under 65 will gain from the higher benefits and survivors protection, with new maximums rising to 322.40 and potentially 434.40 per month for families.
A dairy herd management workshop is scheduled for Friday January 12 at 1 p m in Tripoli Town Hall. Iowa State University extension dairyman Ray Whitmore will lead the session using new dairy record pamphlets and electronic record samples to guide culling feeding management and site decisions. The two hour program invites all interested dairymen with no reservations or fees and includes visuals on state and breed averages to aid benchmarking and sire selection.
The Turtle Feed Stag will be held Friday January 12 at the Tripoli VFW Post Home. Serving starts at 7:00 PM with club rooms open from 4:00 PM. Admission is 2.00 dollars.
Mrs. Herman Rose Krueger purchased the Elda Everding residence. Miss Everding, a County Home employee, moved in Saturday to make the home her own.
The town of Tripoli sold $37,000 in library bonds on January 2. American Savings Bank purchased the entire issue at an average interest rate of 4.58515 percent to fund a new public library.
Bremer Extension Council elected officers for 1968 at an organization meeting held Wednesday evening January 3. Re-elected for a one year term were Marvin Redies Waverly chairman William Burrow Tripoli vice chairman Mrs Dean Dietz Plainfield secretary and Elston Bull Waverly treasurer. Other members include Erwin Platte Sumner Lloyd Nuss Sumner Mrs W B Weeber Tripoli Dean Huber Waverly Richard Foelske Janesville Howard Smith Waverly Richard Reynolds Sumner Arnold Hesse Denver Mrs Louis Gitch Sumner and John Droste Waverly.
Tripoli high school teams beat Janesville on Friday night with the Pantherettes winning 75 58 and the Panthers prevailing 60 45. Marilyn Blume scored 51 points for the girls as Barb Wente led with 13 rebounds and Roxie Wittenburg had seven interceptions. Coach Van Ahn praised defense and team play while noting upcoming Cedar Wapsie conference games.
Tri poli Community schools will host an eight team invitational wrestling tournament in the high school gym next Saturday. Three sessions are scheduled with quarterfinals at 9 00 a m semifinals at 2 00 p m and consolation and finals at 7 p m. Teams include Denver Greene Janesville Nashua Plainfield Tripoli Turkey Valley and Wapsie Valley. Admission 75 cents for adults and 50 cents for students per session.
Vernon L Moellers was sworn in as mayor and led oath ceremonies for LeRoy E Steege Raymond Steinberg James Krueger Lavern Gielau and Virgil Bruns with John P DeVries re-elected as treasurer Henr y Abbas Jr. named town clerk Committees appointed include Steege as pro tem Wooldrik as town marshal and fire chief Kurtt as library board member. Cedar Valley Engineering Co named town engineer. Regular meetings set for first Monday at 7 p m and a full time policeman discussed along with a water tower drilling recommendation.
