President Roosevelt cites new methods and a vast spending plan to lift employment, noting 12 billion dollars a year in national spending. He discusses bank deposit guarantees, NR A regulation, and international issues from Russia to Mussolini, warning of potential air exploration and gold discoveries shaping policy.
The January term of district court in Bremer county opened Monday with Judge M F Edwards of Parkersburg presiding. The grand jury was impaneled Tuesday morning with foreman E C Johnson Tripoli and members J B Baker Waverly Fred W Piehl Fairbank Albert Becker Jefferson township Clyde Benton Jackson township H C Spencer Plainfield Frank Schwake Sumner. Herman Menching was bailiff and Mayme Brechner clerk. Two cases were bound over: State of Iowa vs Lloyd Chas Waterloo for larceny in a burglary at Sumner and State of Iowa vs Will McRoberts for extortion. Judge Edwards reappointed J Y Hazlett to the county insane commission, a post he has held since 1901. Kingsley Schiefelbein and Colburn were reappointed as inheritance tax appraisers. Trial assignments were set for Tuesday and trial jurors notified to report next Tuesday.
The St Johns Lutheran church held its annual meeting on January 4 with morning and afternoon sessions. Officers for 1934 include Secretary H C Detterding, Treasurer Will F Krueger, Collector Oscar Quade, Deacons John Beisner H H Bunger Herman Hage now, Trustees William Block F W Heineman Henry Steidtler, Sexton CC F Wendt, Organist August Wendt, Janitor August Schellhorn. Ladies Aid elected Mrs B F Morf president, Mrs E H Kuker vice president, Mrs H H Bunger secretary, Mrs Oscar Quade treasurer.
The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion Hall Tuesday January 9 with 19 members present. President Mrs. Kelsey led the ritual and minutes were read by the secretary treasurer. A financial report by treasurer pro tem Mrs. J A Hale followed and the group studied the Star Spangled Banner and the Auxiliary preamble before adjournment and a social lunch hosted by Mrs. A D Chapin Mrs. Kenneth Chapin and Mrs. Nels Debel. Members attending the Bremer county meeting in VIt was noted.
At the annual meeting held Monday January 8 the Fremont Creamery Company elected officers for the year: President M. A. Woodcock, Secretary J. P. Snelling, Directors H. F. Klemp W. D. Towne and W. Schmidt. The creamery reported a very satisfactory volume of business for 1933.
A birthday gathering marked Mrs. Louise Boderman 89th birthday with family from Oelwein Evanston LA Readlyn and nearby towns visiting at the home of Mrs F H Harmening Friday January 5. Dick Boderman of California attended for the first time in years. Guests shared lunch and conversation, and Mrs Boderman remains in good health for her age.
Applications for corn loans approved for Bremer county farmers have reached 44 393 dollars for 126 farmers. Weekly loans list multiple recipients from January 3 to January 9 with amounts ranging from about 14 to 842 dollars.
The Ladies' Improvement Club met at Mrs. L. H. Fink's home on Tuesday Jan 9 with nine members present. Annual officers were elected: Mrs. Joe Lien president, Mrs. C H Smith vice president, Mrs. William Ambrose secretary, Mrs. A A Belknap treasurer. Regular meetings set for the first Tuesday each month. A lunch was served by hostess Mrs. Fink after the business session.
Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Mcumber entertained at a 6 30 dinner Sunday evening. Guests were Bert Franklin and son Emory of Brisbane North Dakota, and Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Franklin southeast of town.
The Congregational church met for a potluck supper and annual meeting. Reports highlighted a rising Sunday school with a 20 piece orchestra led by Harold Frese. Pastor Rev. E Forrest Byers noted Tripoli church gains, world denomination size, and affiliations. officers elected for 1934 include Moderator H J Frese and many others. W D Chapin elected deacon. Aid held its annual meeting.
The St Peter s Evangelical congregation held its annual meeting at the church on Sunday afternoon January 7 electing J J Fink cashier to succeed John Berlin Jr who declined further term Officers reelected included R W Rettig secretary Carl Drape treasurer and Herman Reding and Will Eichman as trustees Clarence Kimbal rehired as organist and Herman Moeller rehired as cemetery caretaker Repairs and redecorating to interior were approved including ceiling and walls. The janitor position not yet let. The Ladies Aid met January 3 with 32 members present electing new officers and reporting finances. Mrs R W Rettig was reelected president and Mrs F D Kimbal vice president. Mrs J J Fink became secretary and Mrs E A Kleis elected treasurer replacing Mrs H H Buls. Flower committee named Mrs Joe Sien and Mrs Fred Duecker. A lunch followed hosted by Mrs J A Koch and Mrs Ernest Drewis.
Thirty five Bremer county men will carry on a highway safety campaign under Perry Ullrich. D F Huntoon of Waterloo outlined the plan at a meeting. The group will check traffic violations. First offense yields a mild letter, second is reported to the sheriff, third brings state officer attention.
The Royal Neighbors will meet at their hall Thursday evening January 11 for regular business. During the evening officers will be installed and the January committee will provide entertainment. Mrs. H. H. Bull and Mrs. Will Eichmann will serve as hostesses.
The meeting of the year occurred in the church basement on Thursday afternoon. After the business session, the annual election of officers was held with Mrs. William Ambrose as vice president, Mrs. F. A. Rebholz as secretary, Mrs. A. A. Belknap as treasurer, and Mrs. W. H. Krull continuing as former president pro tem until a president is elected. A picnic dinner followed with families as guests.
Margaret Segebarth of Frederika wed Neil Bravener of Fredericksburg on New Year’s Day at a Waterloo area Lutheran church. The bride, a Frederika High School and Iowa State Teachers College alumna, taught in Chickasaw County and Fredericksburg area for five years. They will reside near Fredericksburg for the rest of the school year.
Miss Effie O'Rourke and Earl O'Connell were wed January 1 at seven pm in the Wa verly Methodist parsonage by Rev. H D Temple. Attendant was Mrs John Kellner of Waverly. Mrs O'Connell has taught in Bremer county for fifteen years and in district four Warren township this year, while groom is a prosperous young farmer. The couple, lifelong locals, are well esteemed and plan a happy home.
Funeral services for 61 year old Fred Lehmkuhl were held at St. John's Lutheran church in Fairbank with Rev. H. J. Heilmann officiating. Burial followed in Fairbank cemetery. Lehmkuhl died Thursday January 4 after two years of illness. Born March 19, 1872 in Addison Illinois, he moved with his family to Bremer county before settling in Fairbank in 1895 to run a hardware business. He married Olga Farm of Westgate on August 5 1897. He served as deputy sheriff of Buchanan county and as sheriff for two terms. He later lived in Independence. He is survived by his wife of Independence son Harold of Newark New Jersey and four brothers August Oak Park Illinois Ernest Waverly Herman Westgate and William Fairbank.
The St Pauls Lutheran congregation in Siegel held its annual meeting on Tuesday January 2. New officers elected include trustees Carl Schwarze and Will Kammeyer and deacon H W Bergmann. Re-elected are secretary Ernest Hoppenworth collector John Henning treasurer W H Grebien and deacons Aug H Bergmann and W Schweer.
Dr. E. C. Claus traveled to Iowa City for a medical examination at the university hospital and returned Saturday evening. Bert Franklin and his son Emory of Brisband North Dakota were dinner guests Sunday at the home of Mr and Mrs D W Chapin south of town at 12:30.
Dr W A Rohlf marked his 23rd birthday clinic at St Josephs Mercy hospital with about 90 physicians in attendance. A 6:30 banquet at Hotel Fortner fed 97 guests, followed by talks from J F Auner of Des Moines and other surgeons. Mrs McDaniel of Nashua prepared the silver and white ten cake birthday cake.
Workmen on the river bank uncovered wires along the rocky river bottom and a dynamite stick with a cap. Investigation showed five charges had been placed earlier to blast rock. four exploded, one cap damaged. Officials determined the scene resulted from a past blasting rather than an active criminal act.
The grand jury was empaneled by Hon. M. F. Edwards Tuesday at ten o clock. Drawing jurors for the January term included E. C. Johnson foreman Fred W Piehl Fred Bergman Albert Becker H A Spencer Frank Schwake and J B Baker Mayme Brechner named clerk for 1934 Herman Mensching as bailiff No business on Tuesday but the panel will convene Wednesday.
Miss Bernice Kromer of Charles City wed William Mueller of Waverly at St John s Lutheran church on New Year s day. Rev C C Prottengeier officiated. A six o clock dinner for 50 guests followed at the groom s parents home. The couple will live on a Plainfield area farm.
Mr and Mrs H C Frese were surprised by friends last Saturday at the home of Mr and Mrs G W Bredow to celebrate 25 years of marriage. A 6 30 dinner followed by pinochle honors went to Mrs Fred Koch and Walter Amman. Mr and Mrs Fred Koch attended the 25 year wedding at Tripoli.
Louie Rodemeyer narrowly escaped serious injury when his car ran off a road near the Wolf hatchery in dense fog. He suffered painful cuts and bruises while his granddaughter, being taken home, sustained two front teeth knocked out along with cuts and bruises. The car was badly damaged.
Steve Selbig, long troubled by heart issues, fell seriously ill last Thursday and was admitted to Mercy hospital for treatment. Mrs. Bert Babcock, ill for weeks, was also taken to Mercy with plans for gall bladder surgery when strength allows. Mrs. E. A. Schiefelbein had the prior condition noted.
