County engineer Welshon reported snow and ice conditions push winter rock program over budget. Salt expenditures exceed allocation with $3,100 for chloride and $2,850 for salt mixed product. Weather and storms threaten road maintenance, reducing funds for next summer.
Tripoli high school concert band will perform at the Waterloo Black Hawks game Sunday February 9 at 2 p m in McElroy Auditorium. They will play before game time and between periods with radio KXEL carrying the broadcast. A school town presentation is planned. trip is all expenses paid by the Waterloo team.
Bremer County supervisors awarded project L-8169 for the Smoketown bridge over the Wapsipinicon River to Kehe Construction Co. of Waverly for 6,542.07. Bids totaled two. completion is set for September 1. The county will supply all materials at the site. the bridge replaces an unsafe structure removed in spring 1967.
Region 4 Jaycee members attended a Sunday afternoon meeting and dinner at McGregor with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Meyer Mr. and Mrs. Duane Bremer Richard Meyer Gary Bennett and Beverly Kohagen counted among the participants.
Curves, intersections and hills cited by Mr Welshons as hazardous. The county has about six more chemical applications in hand and urges extreme caution on all county blacktops. Full ice treatment will resume when chemical becomes available.
A Bremer county event hosted by Tripoli Community School organized the first Vocational Fair for seven high schools. About 500 students spoke with 33 area businesses and organizations to explore future employment and qualifications. Guidance counselors from Shell Rock Janesville Plainsfield Denver Sumner and Wapsie Valley assisted. Mothers Music night planned at home economics room later in the week.
Farmers are invited to a corn production clinic at Tri Poli Town Hall on Wednesday February 12. The meeting, sponsored by Pioneer seed corn salesmen, starts at 1 30 p m refreshments served. Topics include key ways to increase corn profits in 1969 plus updates on Pioneer hybrids and new insecticides and herbicides. Attendees receive Pioneer booklet Keys to Corn Profits.
Gordon Card president of Bremer county Farm Bureau says all road classes need more revenue rather than focusing on one system. He warns against diverting funds from secondary roads and emphasizes agriculture depends on adequate roads to move supplies and products.
The Iowa Department of Public Instruction issues guidelines for making up lost school days due to road and weather closures. Districts should extend the year into June if possible and use scheduled vacations for makeup days while ensuring state aid considerations are justified. An attorney general opinion allows Saturday operation in emergencies with local decision and future forms will gather district efforts on makeup time.
Mrs. Randolph Schwarze returned Sunday afternoon from Scholtz Memorial hospital Waterloo where she had been a patient since January 26 after falling on ice and severely fracturing her left wrist.
The Wapsie Sportsmen's Club held its annual meeting in Tripoli Town Hall with over 80 attendees and a turkey dinner. Directors elected to three year terms were Richard Harms L J Block and Robert Kuhrt to replace Ray Block Walter Steward and Erwin Towne. Remaining holdovers include Ted Olmstead Lorenz Meier Woodrow Klemp Vern Schildroth Richard Truog and Les Boeckmann.
Funeral services were Tuesday at Faith United Church of Christ for William Schweer 87 who died Friday at home of a heart attack. Burial followed at the church cemetery. Schweer born Oct 1 1882 farmed in Tripoli 33 years. Survived by wife Anna daughter Renetta Meier two grandchildren and four great grandchildren a brother Herman and sister Mrs Herman Buchholz, both of Tripoli.
Tripoli Feed and Livestock plans an open house Friday February 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. Free coffee and ham sandwiches will be served and premiums offered with Rath feeds.
Michael Fink son of Mr and Mrs Robert Fink left Thursday for San Francisco where he will receive a two year duty assignment in the Navy.
Arnold Stromer entered Allen Memorial hospital in Waterloo today and will undergo eye surgery Thursday.
Tripoli Pantherettes clinched the Cedar-Wapsie conference race with a 65 61 victory over Wapsie Valley. Marilyn Blume led with 42 points as Tripoli improved to 9 0 in league play. Wapsie Valley boys rose to first with a 74 65 win over Tripoli. Coach Dave Ray praised effort and noted Dan Biester fouled out as turning point.
Tripoli Teen Council plans a gathering at Tripoli Bowl-In on Thursday February 6 at 8 15 p m. The meeting invites local youths to discuss community activities and youth issues at the bowling center.
Class A sectional wrestling tours run Feb 10 to 13 at eight sites. Tripoli wrestlers compete at Denver on Feb 12 starting 4 30 p m. Denver site includes Denver Edgewood Colesburg Eastern Allamakee Nashua North Winneshiek Decorah Plainfield Tripoli. Champions and runners up advance to districts Feb 21 22 at Jesup, with state tourney Feb 28 and March 1 at Waterloo McElroy Auditorium for classes AAA AA and A.
Tripoli varsity wrestlers defeated Independence 37 to 10 on Tuesday night with four pins by Rany Neuendorf Curtis Neuendorf Mike Harris and Gene Johnson Neuendorf remains undefeated this season pinning his opponent in the second period Individual matches featured wins by Neuendorf Harris Whitney Garner Garner Kuecker Johnson and Buchholz among others with pins and decisions across weight classes.
There will be no regular banking service in Tripoli on Wednesday February 12 in observance of Lincoln's birthday. The local American Savings Bank and other Bremer county banks will close per the Bremer County Bankers Association schedule.
Ray Bloom, hospitalized at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, submitted to back surgery there on Friday.
