An appeal for Red Cross aid reports Tripoli has contributed $100 toward its quota with $50 sent to headquarters and $50 more sought. Donations are collected at the American Savings Bank to help drought sufferers. A plan to ship a carload of eggs is in progress with Panzer Produce and the Iowa Poultry Association coordinating. Egg donations may be left at Panzer Produce Plant. all eggs must arrive by Saturday night.
Tripoli high school debaters beat Oelwein 12 to 4 in both debates held at Oelwein and Tripoli under state sectional rules. Elinor Kelsey and Millard Eichmann won the negative round at Oelwein while Berdine Bockhaus and Victor Gaede won the affirmative at Tripoli. The wins lift Tripoli into the state sectional tournament with Elkader and McGregor next.
George Gleason dies at 37 after weeks with pneumonia and a heart attack. Funeral services were held at Matthias funeral parlors then in Waverly Methodist church, burial in Harlington cemetery. He leaves a widow four children and was a respected farmer and citizen from the local community.
Mr and Mrs William Schultz marked his 46th birthday on Tuesday February 3 with a daytime gathering of relatives and friends. Evening guests included a long list of family friends and relatives, followed by a midnight lunch hosted by the hostess.
Mrs Bertha Lewis Mrs P A Goodenbour and Mr and Mrs C H Eichmann attended a postnuptial shower in Waterloo Saturday evening honoring Mrs Randolph Buhr formerly Miss Thelma Spragg. The event was hosted by Mr and Mrs August Schneider.

Forum drew crowds. income tax support broad, county plan split between Farm Bureau and Farmers Union factions. AG study questioned constitutional scope and road-change authority, while a proposed safeguard would allow court review of amendments after two assemblies. Governor Turner issued first proclamation urging Red Cross relief as farm aid and local drives mobilized funds. State university probe ordered, led by Cedar Rapids editor Verne Marshall, targeting Jessup and the State Board of Education.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Geweke were surprised on their 20th wedding anniversary. Relatives and neighbors hosted music, singing and visiting on Sunday February 1. A late lunch was prepared by self invited guests and served to all attendees including Readlyn Tripoli and Waterloo residents.
Frederika Frederika and Denver high school boys split a 23 all draw after overtime failed to resolve the game. Hageman and Schroeder starred for Denver while Carney led Frederika. The Frederika girls routed Sonia 20 to 4, Carroll top scoring for Frederika.

On account of mail schedule changes many letters are omitted weekly as they arrive too late to set in type before press. Mail news letters so they reach the office by Tuesday. The Leader goes to press at two o clock Wednesday afternoon so all news must be set before noon that day. If entire letter cannot be sent, mail the first installment a day earlier. If other news occurs after mailing, call the Leader and we will prepare the copy.
In Waverly Bremer County over 500 residents filled the Community club rooms for Gov. Turner’s rural address the first since taking office. About 470 banquet attendees heard him discuss tax reform state income tax and county assessor plans while praising farm bureaus and community clubs for Iowa progress. Senator Hagemann praised Turner and introduced him. Offringa acted as toastmaster.
J J Fink received a deep cut on the forehead requiring two stitches after a motorist sideswiped his car four miles south of Tripoli while he was returning from Oran. His car overturned into a ditch and sustained heavy damage. The other driver fled the scene.

The Leader unveils a seven column, larger eight page edition this week. Since taking over seven years ago the paper has expanded from eight pages six columns to its current eight page seven column format, printed locally. Last Friday Tripoli hosted Plainfield in a junior and high school doubleheader. The juniors held Plainfield to 10-2, while the feature game saw Tripoli edge Plainfield 22-19 as both teams traded baskets in a low scoring second half. Referee was Swensen of Waverly, with Robert Sorg officiating.
Mrs. Wilhelmina Ruhrmeister celebrated her 79th birthday with a dinner and supper at her daughter and son in law Mr. and Mrs. Will Propp home. Surrounded by all her children and grandchildren from the area she received many remembrances for the occasion. Guests included Miss Ida Propp and Arthur Redies.
Ray Buchanan has purchased the McBride Bakery from Fred McBride of Belmond and assumed ownership on Monday. Buchanan brings extensive baking experience from Waterloo shops and will be aided by Esther Holmes Buchanan. The community urges support as the new owners promise up-to-date pastries and bread.

County items report a man named W T Schmidt injured after being struck by a car at Broadie drug store area. The driver Louis Bierman of Yardo garage tried to avoid him but hit him, leaving Schmidt with facial cuts and bruises. no bones broken. Four local break-ins noted: Rock Island depot candy machines, Scougal filling station locked but entered, Murphy Flower Shop, and Joe Grawe residence where two ladies purses and $1.50 were taken. authorities suspect local suspects. Citizens urged to lock doors.
Arnold Reeck died January 19 in a Chicago hospital after weeks of illness. His sister Mrs. Art Havenstrite traveled to Chicago and brought his body to Des Moines for burial. He leaves his mother Mrs. Ludwig Beeck, sisters Mrs. Clara Robinson and Mrs. Havenstrite, and brothers Fred, Will, John, and Arthur in various Iowa towns. he attended Sumner high school.
Four Waverly produce dealers and hatcherymen contributed 120 dozen eggs for shipment to Des Moines and then to Arkansas to aid families in need after last summer's drought. Donors include Goodrich & Gallagher, Waverly Produce, Wolf Hatchery, and Orchard Produce. Over $350 from city supporters will also be sent to the affected district.

Henry Moeller of Independence area was brought before the insane commission last week and declared a fit subject for treatment at the state hospital in Independence. He had earlier been confined there years ago, recovering enough to be released, but recent signs of recurrence led to his recommitment.

Mrs John Lagomarcino was called to Osage last week due to the death of her mother Mrs H S Scott aged 80 who lived in Plainfield. Scott's husband a Civil War veteran died about three years ago and she was a well known visitor in the city. Joe Grawe reports eighteen horses are being conditioned at the fair grounds horse barn for upcoming races. Frank Peck, after a paralytic stroke, remains in serious condition.
