The Leader reports that many new homes and several farm buildings were completed in Tripoli and surrounding communities in 1952. Remodeling projects were common. Beginning with this issue, photos of homes barns machine sheds corn cribs chicken houses and hog houses will be published, with more pictures to come later.
The Tripoli high school Pantherettes will face Reinbeck in the first round of the girls sectional basketball tournament at Janesville on Tuesday January 27 at 8 30 p m Also listed are other Bremer county teams Denver Janesville Plainfield Readlyn and Frederika The Frederika girls play in Fredericksburg the week of January 26 with matchups including Frederika Hawkeye Alpha and Randalia Waucoma as potential rivals.
Rain sleet and three inches of snow thickened the Tripoli area over the last week forming icy highways. Precipitation totaled 1.10 inches with .23 inches Friday and .87 inches Saturday. Temperatures ranged from 14 to 39 degrees with daily averages around 32 and 21.3 for highs and lows respectively. Data recorded by E. C. Biermann noted the week’s temperature extremes.
A survey of three narrow bridges on Highway 63 south of New Hampton Iowa was started last week. The Iowa state highway commission resident engineer G W Fiddick notes a widening decision for 1953 is unclear. Contracts for asphalt resurfacing on Highway 63 were let to Iowa Road Building Co Fairmont Minn for 625 miles at 95059 25 and to Alexander Construction Co Minneapolis for 12 miles at 157176 95.
Mrs. Katherine Louise Allen 90 of Waterloo died Wednesday at 4 30 p m at her home from complications of advanced age. Funeral held Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic church with Rev E J O Hagan officiating. Burial in St Mary's cemetery. Born March 4 1866 in Columbus Wisconsin she moved to Bremer county Iowa as a child and married Edward Stowell in 1880 and Fred Allen in 1901. Survived by one son three daughters two sisters two brothers nine grandchildren 19 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. The report notes relatives visiting in Cedar Rapids and Culver City California.
Mr and Mrs August Fredrichs will observe their silver wedding anniversary on Sunday December 28 at their home. Relatives and friends are invited to an open house from 2 to 4 PM and from 7:30 to 9:30 PM to mark the occasion.
Mrs Bertha Sophia Maria Frost Meyer 75 died Monday December 15 at her son Art Meyer southwest of Tripoli. Funeral services were held Friday December 19 at 1 30 pm at Meier funeral home and 2 pm at St Pauls Evangelical and Reformed Buck Creek with Rev Reuben J Topp officiating. Burial in church cemetery. Survivors include five sons John Edward Christ Willie and Arthur and six daughters Helen Ida Leta Bertha Amanda Anna, 42 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was born December 27 1875 in Denver Iowa and married William Meyer March 10 1899.
August H. Bockhaus 78 retired farmer died Friday evening at his home in Tripoli. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Meier funeral home in Tripoli and St. John's Lutheran church in Frederika. burial in St. Pauls Lutheran cemetery Siegel. Survivors include his widow three sons Elmer Clarence Raymond two daughters Leola Wilma LaVera and a sister Emma Engelking plus a half brother Herman Bockhaus. He was born March 29 1874 in Illinois and moved to Iowa with his parents in 1901. The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary March 3 1951.
The Tripoli post office will be closed all day Thursday December 25 in observance of Christmas. No rural mail delivery Thursday and Friday December 25 and 26 as December 26 is a postal holiday. Star route service will run Friday. mail received and dispatched at usual post office times. Window service Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for public convenience, closing at 1 p.m. for the rest of the day.
Mrs Robert Sassmann formerly of Waterloo will move soon to join her husband Pvt Robert Sassmann in Manhatten Kansas. The notice notes the couple will reside there after the upcoming move.
The Tripoli Leader will be published a day early on Tuesday December 30 instead of Wednesday December 31 due to New Year’s Day holiday. News correspondents and advertisers are asked to submit copy one day earlier than usual.
Santa Claus of the North Pole greeted Tripoli youngsters after free movies at the Tripoli theatre on December 13 and 20. Sponsored by the Tripoli Commercial Club, he collected letters from boys and girls and sent them to The Leader to publish in this week’s Christmas issue. The letters appear on inside pages.
In a National Basketball League game at the Waterloo YMCA last Wednesday night, Kramer's produce of Tripoli lost to Voorhies of Waterloo 70 to 49. Kuethe scored 27 for Kramer's with 10 field goals and seven free throws, while Arter led Voorhies with 23 points.
Roger W. Babson best known for business forecasts will publish his Business and Financial Outlook for 1953 in the next issue of The Tripoli Leader. His 1952 accuracy stood at 88 percent, with highlights including no World War III in 1952 and no repeal of the Taft Hartley Law.
Tripoli High School Panthers meet Sumner in the lone Class A sectional boys basketball game at Sumner Friday night February 20 at 8 30. The winner advances to the district tournament. Other Class B teams include Oran Fairbank Hawkeye Fredericksburg Frederika Immaculate Conception of Fairbank.
Dec 31 1952 is deadline to complete soil and water conservation practices under the Agricultural Conservation Program. Farmers must report by Jan 9 1953 and provide evidence of compliance with program standards. County PMA will check all practices. ACP funds are a public partnership to protect land productivity.
