Despite rain Friday, Tripoli’s first Poultry and Egg Carnival drew a fine turnout. Winners across divisions received prizes including a television set, clocks, and kitchenware while events indoors and a fireworks display kept guests entertained.
Two Tripoli horses owned by Walter Sommer placed in money at the Decorah event. Ragtime won his race and Golden Jack finished second. jockey Dale Schmidt also rode both mounts. The day included a flower show with 92 arrangements and multiple division prizes.
Bremer county court announces the September term begins Tuesday Sept 4 at 2 pm with Judge William P. Butler presiding. Trial jurors report Sept 10 at 10 am. List of jurors includes names from Dunkerton Janesville Nashua Readlyn Sumner Tripoli Waverly and Plainfield among others.
Bremer county announces Salk polio vaccines available to all residents. Large Iowa shipment ends vaccination restrictions as danger season nears. Infants and teens underserved. adults over 20 face higher risk. free vaccine for the medically indigent. others urged to contact physicians or welfare services.
Readlyn correspondent Anna Schumacher resumes duties for The Leader after resigning last spring. She will succeed Berdine Lacy, who retired this week.
Donald D. Buenger son of Mr and Mrs Otto Buenger came home after a year with the 655th Medical Co at Wertheim Germany He will resume college studies this fall.
Public sale of household goods set for Saturday at the William Ambrose home in Tripoli. Conrad Heideman acts as auctioneer with a 1:30 p.m. start. rain postponement to Monday August 27. Ad in this issue describes the sale.
Funeral services for Dr. E. D. Plass 70 head to First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. He died in Saranac Lake New York from a pulmonary hemorrhage while visiting his daughter Mrs. W A Buckley. He led obstetrics gynecology at the University of Iowa from 1924 to 1950. He is survived by son William T. Plass daughters Mrs Buckley Betty Plass six grandchildren.
Elaine Dorothy Juel daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Juel married Melvin Arthur Bergmann son of Mr and Mrs Alvin Bergmann in a Sunday ceremony at the bride’s parents home Ionia Rev A C Woodcock officiated in a small gathering of immediate families Myrna Schwein was maid of honor Robert Holm served as best man A reception for twenty guests from Cedar Falls Ionia Chicago and Tripoli followed The couple both graduated in 1956 from Tripoli High and Frederika High respectively.
The Rev. Robert W. Shields of First Congregational Church Tripoli will speak at the Trans Miss Philatelic Society banquet at the Hotel Savery Des Moines Saturday Sept 8 at 6 30 PM. He will also serve on the exhibition judges panel.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Steege of Fredericksburg announce the engagement of their daughter Marilyn Marie to Vernon Uhlenberg son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Uhlenberg of Fredericksburg. The wedding is set for Thursday September 6 at 2 pm at Peace Evangelical and Reformed church Fredericksburg.
Robert G Struckman purchased the W. W. Sell residence in west Tripoli and took possession Monday last week. He is employed by Wm. Ambrose Auto Co. The Sells bought the Al Rieck residence on South Main Street last spring and have been living there.
Leo Bailey came home to Waterloo Friday after five weeks as a Scholtz Memorial Hospital patient. He underwent spine surgery and is recovering at home.
Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Ahrenholzer and family were Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Grapp of Waverly.
Two people were hospitalized after a Saturday morning crash on Highway 3 east of Readlyn. A new 1956 Chevrolet station wagon was destroyed when Linda Orchard and her daughter Roxanne were hit by a passing car while braking in rain. The other driver, Fred Wessel, escaped damage. the semi driver was John E. Bayous. A second crash near the Knittel creamery involved Frank Grayson and Randolph Kuhlmann with minor injuries.
Larry Strottmann of Readlyn was elected president of the Bremer County Boys 4-H clubs at the annual Wa verly meeting. He has led in multiple offices, contributed to the Iowa State Fair 4-H judging team, and raises purebred Jersey cattle. Also elected were Bill Heffernan vice-president Sonia Walter Ruth secretary Kermit Pothast treasurer and Ronald Lohmann reporter.
Tripoli residents faced wide temperature swings with a high of 90 last Wednesday and a low of 44 on Monday and Tuesday mornings. A cool front lingered Sunday to Tuesday, with a warming trend expected today. Light rain added to an unusually moist week while the Poultry and Egg Carnival proceeded despite showers.
George M. Lindsley returns home after spending several weeks in Iowa City hospital following surgery. He is reported in good spirits and recuperating at home with family.
About 1200 members and friends gathered at St John Lutheran Church Crane Creek for a 90th anniversary celebration last Sunday. Dr H W Siefkes preached the morning service Rev H Knoploh delivered the afternoon sermon and Dr John Hilner spoke at the evening service. The church thanks all participants donors flower senders and neighboring pastors for greetings.
Denver and Sumner league pairs in the American Amateur Baseball Congress tourney Friday at Sumner. Denver faces Des Moines at 7 p m and Sumner plays Festina at 9 p m. Sumner is unbeaten and recently beat Denver 3 2 in a dramatic late rally.
Grace Moehlis of Waterloo was guest of honor at a miscellaneous shower hosted by her parents Mr and Mrs John Moehlis Jr at their home. About 50 guests from Sumner Fairbank Oelwein Hazleton Gilbertville Waterloo and Tripoli attended. Grace is to wed Leroy J Lies Jr of Gilbertville at Immaculate Conception church on Sept 8.
Margaret Homeister of Waverly is spending the week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Zabel.
Mrs. Leslie Krafft of Armstrong announces the engagement of their daughter Betty Krafft to Paul Boesen son of Mr and Mrs Axel Boesen of Eyota Minnesota Betty is a senior at the Methodist Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester and a Tri-Poly graduate while Paul attends Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville Illinois
Bremer county will start the school year Aug 27 at 36 rural schools and new community schools in Tripoli and Denver. Tripoli pupils face a half day. Enrollment may rise due to reorganization, with high school up about 15 and total Tripoli students near 500.
