McNielas 12 showed the Angus steer in Friday County Fair judging. Judge Ottumwa awarded grand champion Iverson and reserved diamond queen Joanne, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fay of Sumner. The winner will represent the county in the State Contest at Des Moines.
Seventeen youths received blue ribbons at a Bremer County presentation day with seven 4-H members advancing to the Dairy and Congress competition. Exhibitors from Sumner Waverly Janesville Tripoli and Whitney earned blue ribbons for market beef and dairy items.
The Iowa Department of Social Services reports Bremer county July welfare disbursements totaling 25757 dollars for 334 recipients. Old age assistance covers 144 cases totaling 17325 with one new and three closed. Aid to dependent children serves 178 people 7380 dollars with three new and one closed. Blind aid shows two cases 210 dollars. disabled aid ten cases 842 dollars.
Mr and Mrs Raymond F Buchholz hosted the 15th annual reunion of World War II veterans from the 3818 Qm Gas Supply Co The event Sunday at Town Hall drew 65 attendees from 22 families with members traveling from Kansas Nebraska Wisconsin and Iowa The furthest delegation came from Chanute Kansas.
Rev. and Mrs. J. A. Nansen will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at 6215 Louisville Drive in Lubbock Texas on Sunday August 25. Nansen formerly pastored the Tripoli Congregational church before its merger with the Evangelical and Reformed church.
The Iowa Conservation Commission seeks about 3 500 acres in Webster County for Brushy Creek Lake State Park including a 900 acre section inside the park. Landowners report dissatisfaction with state offers and six of 31 have settled. Some threaten condemnation to secure compensation. Dr Charles Thomas Lehigh veterinarian notes the grievances aired at a commission meeting.
Residents and families visited Tripoli Nursing Home with multiple Sunday and weekday calls. Notable guests included four generation photo subjects Bertha Wallace and descendants, plus travelers from Des Moines and Minneapolis. Reverend Gundel led a Wednesday service with several attendees.
Tripoli Town Council held a special session on August 7 to review remaining work on streets with curb and gutter installed this year. They previously planned only to level intersections and driveways for spring passability. The panel ordered Bert B Hanson Associates to prepare a cost survey to finish grade seal and surface and aim for completion this fall.
Iowa Republican Chairman Jack Warren argues that politicians will distrust presidential polls after the clash between Louis Harris and George Gallup surveys. He notes delegates at the Republican convention lost confidence in polls as they seek winners, and recalls the Dewey-Truman forecast era.
Des Moines based columnist Harlan Miller who wrote Over the Coffee for nearly four decades in the Des Moines Register died August 7 in Des Moines. He was known for provocative writing and often quipped that no one was neutral about him. His wife, the famed B.W., died a year earlier. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.

The Iowa Republican delegation favored Nixon on the first roll call at Miami Beach with 13 votes to Rockefeller eight and Reagan three. Delegation splits show Nixon supporters listed by city and several Nixon allies named alongside Rockefeller and Reagan backers. State Senator Robert Rigler of New Hampton chaired Nixon’s Iowa campaign.
Dewey Goode, former state representative from Bloomfield, says Iowa’s taxable receipts for the first year of the biennium are about 28.1 million dollars under estimate. If the second year matches the first, the state would be 56.2 million under the biennium estimate, yielding a deficit of 14.457 million and erasing the 112 million surplus.
Farm Bureau members from three states join a newly formed Interstate Producers Association created by merging three state groups. In Iowa the group buys at Waukon DeWitt Tipton Allison Maynard Elkader Ridgeway Washington and Grinnell with a feeder pig facility at Mount Pleasant. Combined sales are expected to reach 3,250,000 head annually.
Friends and relatives baled straw at the Wilbert Bunger farm on Saturday while Mr. Bunger recuperates at home after a heart attack last month.
Henry Hagen was admitted to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo for observation on Sunday. He is assigned room 402 for treatment and monitoring.
The Youth Fellowship of Faith United Church of Christ hosts a bake sale on Saturday August 17 from 9 a m to 12 noon at the Farmers Store. Proceeds support church activities and missions.
Tripoli Night at the Waterloo Hawks baseball park is re scheduled to Thursday August 15 with a 7:30 pm start as Waterloo hosts Clinton. Tripoli merchants bought 500 admission tickets and promote the event to support baseball. Tickets remain available at Ray's Clothiers and other Tripoli shops.
The plan allows a maximum of four buses for riders. Those wanting to ride should be at Tripoli High School at 6 00 p m for head count. Buses depart at 6 15 p m.
All senior band members must bring their band uniforms to Ray's Cleaners for cleaning. Junior and senior band students should bring all school instruments promptly to be checked for any needed repairs.
The Tripoli Men's Bowling Association schedules its annual meeting for Tuesday August 20 at 8 p m at the Tripoli Bowl-In.
Tripoli Community School voters will decide on a second ballot to approve a $140,000 bond for a large addition to the junior-senior high building. The plan adds 9,000 square feet with a new shop, art room, electronics lab, and updated gym and laundry areas, expanding the facility by over 25 percent.
Visitors to the Pine Lake watershed near Eldora can learn about surface runoff tests as tanks and boxes in a field are explained. John M. Lafsen, USDA agricultural engineer with Iowa State University, will describe the research during field days and plowing matches on September 5 and 6, one-half mile east of Eldora.
Voters in the Tripoli Community School district will vote September 9 to fill expiring director terms and the district treasurer post. Incumbent Wm Heffernan seeks re election for district No 2 while Mervyn Ormston does not seek re election in district No 1. Nomination papers are out for Wm Burrow in district No 1. Deadline to file is August 30 at 12 noon. Polls open 12 noon to 7 pm.
Mr and Mrs S A Maurer attended the 1923 class reunion of New Hampton high school at New Hampton Saturday evening. Of 51 graduates 14 are deceased and 18 classmates and spouses were present at the event.
Mike Norris has just returned from serving in Vietnam. The Waterloo trio visited Mrs Clara Niemeyer Thursday afternoon with Mrs Norris and Mike. Supper guests were Mr and Mrs Walter Garland of Iowa Falls and evening visitors were Mr and Mrs Melvin Boehme of Readlyn.
Zearing girls defeated Wapsie Valley 7 to 6 in the state softball semifinal at Hubbard on August 5. Wapsie Valley outhit Zearing but a five run third inning carried the Zearing team to the win. RHE Wapsie Val 101 0210 561 Zearing 105 010 x 757.
