Fredericksburg pitcher Dick Rollins struck out 17, allowing two unearned runs on six hits in a 5 to 2 exhibition win over Tripoli at Mississippi Valley league park. The Mikes brothers supplied key offense as Fredericksburg jumped ahead early and held on, with Rollins dominating the Tripoli bats and Krueger keeping the game competitive.

Mrs E F Byers and sun day school teachers Mrs Alwin Maurer Miss Alice Horsley Rosemary Brewer and Gladys Ambrose entertained all the children of the primary department at a lawn party at the Congregational parsonage on Wednesday afternoon from 2 to 4. Outdoor games followed by light refreshments concluded the event.
Mr and Mrs Herman Bany of Philadelphia visit Readlyn for a ten day stay with the Bany family. On August 9 a reunion of both sides of the Pichelmann and Bany families was held at the Waverly tourist park with over 100 relatives enjoying a picnic and renewal of acquaintances.
Members of the Congregational church hosted a combined reception at the church on Friday evening for Rev E F Byers and his family to welcome them to the community. The program featured talks, a one act play, songs, solos, readings, and an address of welcome followed by ice cream and cake in the basement social. The Byers, formerly of Waterloo, moved to the area in June amid a warm welcome from residents.
George Brewer recalls a severe drought on the Wapsie River around 1894 when the stream ceased to flow and the bed dried, wind blowing dust, with water weeds that sheltered fish. He urges restoration of vegetation to aid game fish more than environmental rhetoric.
Rev Hankammer and family from Yorktown Texas with Louis Hankammer and Lydia Adix visited here on Sunday to attend St John s Lutheran Sunday school picnic. Rev Hankammer, former pastor, joined Sunday services and will travel to Strawberry Point before returning for a longer visit. Louis Hankammer stayed to visit friends.
On August 5 at St Pauls Lutheran Church in Artesian a surprise 25th wedding anniversary for Prof. E A G Mueller and his wife was staged. The event marked Mueller’s 25th year in office with Rev. E F Melcher presiding and Prof. E Lessman at the organ. Gifts included a silver purse and a living room set from their children Gerhardt and Renetta, with many relatives and guests from Readlyn Waterloo Milwaukee Beremen and other places attending.
Frederika special report notes Mr. and Mrs. James Carney of New Hampton marked their fifty ninth anniversary. They once lived on a local farm, later moving to their current home. A Sunday gathering at their son John Carney's house included children and grandchildren plus relatives from New Hampton Frederickburg and local residents. Dinner at six featured family members. Agnes is traveling in Europe and two daughters and two sons could not attend.
Harold Olejniczak ten year old son of Mr and Mrs Joe Olejniczak east of town suffered breaks in both arms from a thirty foot fall from the hay mow of a barn landing on the driveway last Friday morning. He fell head first the entire distance and was unconscious for nearly two hours. He sustained bruises on the head and body.
Lee Goodenbour was hired as school janitor for the coming year by the Independent School District of Tripoli at a Monday school board meeting. Ten applications were filed. The budget, as published in The Leader, was reviewed with no taxpayers present and no objections filed, so the previously published amount stood.
Miss Mildred Seehase received a pleasant surprise party Friday evening August 7 at her parents home near Buck Creek for her 16th birthday. Guests included Hulda and Edwin Seehase Esther I and Est her S Seehase John and Paul Wolff Boretta Warneke Hedwig Kasemeier El sie Buhr Lenova Lester Rieck Edna Sell Minnie Knoploh Irma Schedtler Esther Westendorf and Ray Schlichting. A cake with 16 candles and ice cream were served memory a friendship quilt with each guest’s name. Neighbors Bert Schnadt and family and Irwin Voelker stopped in. Hostess Mrs Herbert Seehase assisted with serving and Herbert Seehase attended.
Frederika special reports H C Bockhaus of Douglas township enlarging and remodeling his residence four and one fourth miles southwest of Frederika. An added 16 by 24 foot wing with a five foot lift and 16 foot corner height is under construction. The building now has two uprights of equal size, is wired for electricity, fitted for a furnace, and described as modern in every detail. Lawrence, the elder son, drew the plan and the work is largely done by father and son with Stanley handling farm duties.
Mr and Mrs Will Bierman and Mrs Wilhelmina Buls with Emil Bierman Romane Armand and Ernest Buls from Western Douglas and Fred Hartman of Waverly visited Devils Backbone state park for sightseeing the fish hatchery and other sights with a picnic dinner included.
E. G. Michael, a Waterloo merchant, is recovering well from hernia surgery performed at Allen Memorial Hospital last Friday. His doctors expect a discharge within about a week.
Denver overpower Tripoli 10 to 3 as Homan fanned 15, while two regulars out hurt Tripoli. Other games saw Dunkerton beat Fredericksburg 6 to 4 on homers by Grinnell with Nieman also going deep, Nashua top Readlyn 10 to 6, and Waverly routing Clarksville 23 to 2 with Welcher striking out nine.
Mr and Mrs H O Steege of Denver visited Mr and Mrs Chris Winning for a birthday trip to the state park Devils Backbone with a picnic. They toured Waterloo and Dubuque areas meeting relatives, with about 37 relatives attending. Mr Winning enjoyed the outing despite rheumatism confinement at home.
Fifty relatives gathered at the Earl Bunth cottage southeast of Waverly on the Cedar River for a farewell picnic for Mae Shane and daughter Maxine of Waterloo who are moving to Des Moines. Attendees listed include the Shanes, Cobbs of Waterloo, Everdings of New Hampton, McKeowns of Sumner and Tripoli, the Kimbals of Readlyn and Tripoli, Beggerow, Crittenden, and Minnie and Carl Bunth of Waverly. A fish fry followed a dinner and social visiting afternoon.
The Ladies' Aid of Crane Creek church invites all to an ice cream social on the church lawn Thursday evening August 13. Come one and all. Everyone welcome.
About ten thousand dollars has been pledged toward the fifteen thousand dollar six per cent first mortgage bond issue of the Waverly Printing Company. The Democrat will publish its last issue this week before the Independent-Republican takes over. Mr and Mrs A G Studier and Mr and Mrs Fred Studier and Norman Studier have moved to Chicago for head office employment, with household goods sent Friday.
Ed Platte, longtime tire and battery station operator on West Bremer Avenue, has leased the Shell Oil station and will erect a 30 by 40 foot hollow tile with stucco shop adjoining the station. Built by Spahn & Rose Lumber, the new facility will be ready for business around September first and Platte will manage both the shop and station.
The Waverly Rest Room, long maintained by the city, is reported to be closed by the City Council to cut expenses. Residents who rely on the facility will be disappointed and hope for reconsideration to keep it open.
Miss Jeanette Jay of this city, reigning women's state amateur trap shooting champion, will travel to Dayton Ohio to join a large contest expected to field over a thousand entrants. The event runs August 20 for ten days and she plans to enter additional events during the period.
Several tanks of catfish were dumped into the Cedar river last week at the request of A. P. Colburn president of the Izaak Walton League. A state fish truck from Lansing placed the fish and other shipments have already been released this season.
