Voters approve a $77,000 bond issue for a new 200000 gallon water storage tower to be built on town land east of the high school in Denver. Of 159 votes cast, 148 yes, 9 no, 2 spoiled. a bid letting date is yet to be set by the council.
The Readlyn area sponsors announce Dynyn's Annual Appreciation Day on August 13. Festivities include a 375 prize drawing at 10 15 p m and a tractor pull at 1:00 p m with four classes awarding first and second cash prizes. Following events include greased pig and catch, softball playoff at the Ballpark with Farmers Co op versus Tripoli, and a 9 PM dance at Readlyn Community Center with the drawing at 10:15 PM.
Wapsie Valley Community announces school opening on Wednesday August 25 with pre registration on August 16 and 17. Students with last names A to M register Monday and N to Z Tuesday. Lunches start the first day of school. Kindergarten book rental $4, grades 1-4 $5, grades 5-8 $6, high school $7. Insurance available.

Glenn Reding nine year old son of Mr and Mrs Merle Reding of Fairbank was seriously injured at his home on Aug 2 when his foot was caught in an elevator while unloading cats. His foot was amputated and he is in Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo. His grandparents Mr and Mrs Henry Lau Readlyn and Mr and Mrs Erwin Reding Sumner. A goodwill fund is started with donations accepted at American Savings Bank or Readlyn Savings Bank.
Arthur C. Sommer 70 of Waterloo died Friday evening at his home. Funeral services were held Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Born October 21 1894 in Tripoli he was a carpenter who worked at John Deere retiring in 1959. He married Rosa Schwemm December 27 1916 in Waverly. Survivors: Rosa his widow two sons Glen A and Robert C of Waterloo two daughters Dorothy Jindrich of Iowa City and Gladys Judas of Waterloo 12 grandchildren a sister Ella Sell of Waterloo and a brother Walter of Tripoli.
The Tripoli girls avenged a prior loss by defeating Denver High School 5-2 on Tuesday evening. The win boosts Tripoli to six wins and two losses for the summer with limited games remaining, aided by strong defense that included three double plays and two runners thrown out at the plate.

The legislature boosted funding for agricultural land tax credits to 15 million dollars, but 40 million dollars would be needed to pay credits in full. Credits are about 37 cents per dollar for next year, with school purposes funded by state tax on agricultural land above 15 mills. Past years saw appropriations fall short, causing pro rata payments.

Karla Bartels 13 percent old daughter of Mr and Mrs Helmuth Bartels Denver lost her big toe and part of a second toe while riding double on a bicycle Tuesday afternoon in Denver. She and her father are patients at Allen hospital where he recovers from recent surgery.

Mrs. Gene Vincent of Tripoli escaped injury Monday morning when she lost control of her car on the highway south of Tripoli. The vehicle rolled over and ended in a corn field after extensive damage.
Ground-breaking services were held Sunday at Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli for a new educational building. Rev. E F Puhlmann led the ceremony as the first spadeful was turned, marking the start of the project.
The Tri poli Nursing Home progress includes Hampton Construction completing front entrance excavation and cement block work. Pledged funds may be received at American Savings Bank with certificates issued. Project costs total about 119,739 including furnishings and architect fees. Moeller Construction handles the expansion. Youngs and Hurmence Electric serve plumbing and electrical work respectively.
