Readlyn baseball club from Bremer county captured the Iowa state semipro championship at Des Moines Western league park by defeating Osceola 19 to 3. Star pitcher Al Bulgren struck out 15 as Readlyn collected 18 hits with just two errors, after semifinal wins over Ottumwa and Charles City. The Des Moines Western league club announced Bulgren would join next spring.
Henry W. Schultz father of Mrs. Lee O. Peacock of this city died at 9 40 a m Saturday at his Waterloo home after a long illness of carcinoma Born October 14 1862 in Watertown Wisconsin he came to Waterloo 23 years ago from Stacyville where he ran a furniture and undertaking business He married Matilda C Kuehl November 10 1892 at St Ansgar Iowa Surviving are widow a son Earl F Schultz Waterloo a daughter Nora Peacock Tripoli a brother Fred Schultz Watertown Wis and three sisters Hannah Gerbig Duluth Minn Minnie Gransee Austin Minn and Mary Krueger Watertown Wis Four grandchildren funeral was Tuesday at 2 p m at Kearns chapel and 230 p m at Grace Methodist Church burial in Fairview Cemetery Casket bearers were six nephews Warren Duenow Frank Krueger Edward Gransee Henry Schultz Arnold Baldner Laverne Kuehl.
Readlyn Wallace Wayne Warneke, 11, died at 1:25 a m Friday from an infection that followed wounds from a fall from a tree stump while playing on July 17. Funeral at St Pauls Lutheran church at 1:30 p m Sunday with Rev Theodore Frese officiating. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs C J Warneke two sisters Yvonne and Eloise three grandparents Mrs Chris Warneke and Mr and Mrs H F Beevers and a great grandmother Mrs Emma Matthias 95.
District court records show the adoption petition for Baby Flanigan by Harry Bangert and Florence Bangert. Also listed is A. Van Valkenburg as trustee versus Mary Riley and others for foreclosure detailing lands in sections 32 and 83 91 11. A separate case cites Otto Zin against H F Schlie for a small monetary amount of 55.07 and includes a transcript of judgment.
Theodore Bany of Oelwein son of Mrs Emma Bany was seriously injured Friday afternoon when a tractor he was unloading from a truck tipped over. The steering wheel pierced his pelvis and four fractures resulted. He was transported to a hospital and is reported to be improving. Dr. A. M. Stegeman assisted with local doctors.
Mr and Mrs John C Fink sr celebrated their thirtieth wedding anniversary with a surprise party at their home on Wednesday July 26. Relatives from Readlyn Oelwein Waverly Langdon and Minneapolis gathered for dinner and evening visiting. Two sons Henry and William could not attend.
Two general showers fell Monday afternoon and early Wednesday morning, aiding crops and pastures in this part of the state. The rain supports a bountiful corn harvest this fall and will benefit late garden crops as well.
Miss Elda Hagen married Walter Oberheu at St. Peter's Evangelical on Sunday July 30 at 2 pm. Rev. Theo Thomas officiated. Bridesmaid Miss Hagen and best man Edwin Hoppenworth stood by as Lohengrin music played. The couple plans farming life on Oberlieu farm in Douglas Township and will reside with his parents.
Mr and Mrs Walter Oberheu were honored at a Tuesday evening event for about 250 relatives and friends at the Jahnke pavilion in Bremer. The party included a post nuptial shower for the bride, whose marriage occurred on Sunday July 30. She received many gifts and guests were served ice cream and cake.
Mr and Mrs C Vern Dunahoo traveled Saturday to Maxwell to spend the week at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Dunahoo.
Fred H. Lohmann a longtime farmer near Tripoli dies after a long illness on Saturday morning July 29 at his home. He was born December 12 1871 at Crane Creek Bremer County and was 61 years 7 months and 17 days old. He married Alwina Redies February 22 1898 and they had four children. Funeral services were held at his home and St John s Lutheran church with interment in the church cemetery.
Bremer County filed its annual report to the state public instruction department via County Superintendent Mildred E. Smith. The count lists 5,041 youths ages 5 to 21, 3,301 aged 7 to 16 with 255 private school enrollees, and 311 eighth grade promotions. Graduates totaled 190 with 86 boys and 104 girls, while daily attendance averaged 2,581.8 in grades and 790.6 in high school. Transportation served 242 pupils at a cost of 4,575.60. County school system includes 81 rural one room schools, nine elementary, one junior high, and eight high schools totaling 100 schools. 105 school houses valued at 732,437. rural and town building values and county levies are itemized.
Harry Bangert 44 died Saturday afternoon at his home from throat cancer after a brief illness. He moved to this city two years ago from Cedar Falls to manage the Waverly Gas office for the Iowa Public Service Co. Funeral services were held at First Methodist Episcopal in Cedar Falls with American Legion, Firing Squad of the Waverly post assisting. He leaves a wife and 13 month old daughter Nancy Rhea, his parents, and sister Mrs. Chris Eriksen Cedar Falls. Rev. Vic tor C. Oltrogge called to Minonk to become pastor. Rev. Elmer E. Tiedt and family depart for Ft Sheridan Ill. for army chaplain duties. Rev. Tiedt will study at University of Chicago for a year. Rev. Oltrogge, former Tripoli resident, will take Tiedt’s place as pastor here Sept 1.
Bertha Laube of this city and Arthur Wollmershauser of St Louis were married on Wednesday afternoon July 26 at St Pauls Lutheran church. Rev R C Schlueter officiated. Attendants were Frederick Laube and Laura Stueber. A reception followed at the bride’s parents home. The couple will reside in St Louis where the groom is employed.
Waverly friends recall Leland Miller who ran a local furniture store before moving to Los Angeles. Miller died July 12 after a car crash caused by a blinded driver who struck an electric pole. He was injured for thirty minutes and died soon after. He is survived by his wife and two children. He left Waverly nine years ago.
The board of supervisors has begun condemnation proceedings against a small acreage five miles northwest of the city owned by William Quibel. They plan a stone quarry and rock crusher. Quibel refused to sell, and appraisers will be appointed to value the land.
Wesley Matthias, 12, son of August Matthias, catches a 9 1 2 pound catfish near Harmon Street Bridge on the Cedar River. It is the largest fish caught in the area this year. Mrs. Mary Mooney visits Oelwein and learns granddaughter Verla Mooney departs for five weeks of band music training in Iowa City with about 35 youths from various communities.
