Bremer county 4-H Fair begins Monday at Waverly Fairgrounds as part of Waverly’s centennial celebration. Entry day starts 9 a.m. with 4-H demonstrations and livestock judging scheduled Tuesday through Friday.
Denver clinches the Cedar Valley league title with a 3-1 victory over Readlyn in a rain postponed makeup game. Readlyn took an early lead on Meyerhoff and Kuethe but Denver capitalized on Bruner’s wildness, scoring in the fifth and sixth innings. Kurtt pitched well for Denver, allowing only three hits, and Denver earns a spot in regional tournaments.

Readlyn special. Elaine Richmann daughter of Mr and Mrs H H Richmann Knittel and Romaine Brase son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Brase Sumner will be married Sunday Aug 19 at 2 30 p m in St Paul s Lutheran church Readlyn. A couple s engagement was announced last December.
Mrs. Augusta Kuhrt 72 died Tuesday morning at Mercy Hospital Waverly after a lingering illness. Services Friday include Rettig Funeral Home at 1 45 p m and St Peter s Evangelical and Reformed Church at 2 p m with Rev E F Puhlmann in charge. Burial in Fremont Cemetery. Born January 19 1885. Readlyn residents will vote on an 8500 bond issue to build a bus garage and provide temporary classroom space for the Readlyn Independent School district. Polls open at Town Hall from 12 noon to 7 pm with a 60 percent majority needed. The district may also use 6500 in the building fund to acquire a site and construct the building.
The Tripoli Summer Recreation program announces its eighth and final week of activities for local children. Highlights include crafts and stories for kindergarten to seven years old on Monday and Thursday, baseball at the ball park on Tuesday and Friday, basket weaving and croquet on Wednesday, and jewelry work plus treats on Friday with coordinated games and contests throughout the week.
Waltz Studios will send representatives to the Town Hall tomorrow Thursday from 2 30 to 6 p m to deliver proofs of children's pictures taken recently for later publication in The Leader.
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Tegtmeier visited Sunday afternoon with Mrs. Louise Lehmkuhl at Veterans' hospital in Marshalltown.
The Tripoli reorganized district proposes a 174 044 budget for 1956 57 with 131 894 to be raised by taxation. Tax per thousand is estimated at 29 59 based on 4 457 597 value and 758 671 credits. A hearing is set at the high school August 13 at 8 p m for taxpayer input.
Funeral services for Ida Meyer 84 were held Monday at Berg Funeral Home and St Pauls Lutheran church with burial at Spring Fountain Cemetery. The Sumner resident died Friday at Sumner hospital after a long illness leaving 10 children and several siblings. Mrs Meyer born January 25 1872 near Tripoli married Adolph Meyer November 1 1888. Her survivors include Henry Louie William and others, with relatives in Tripoli Sumner Waterloo Oelwein and Hillsdale Illinois. Balance of obituary notes Mary Tonne visiting August Tonne home.
Mrs Arnold Westendorf submitted a winning entry in a Sealy Inc national contest announced by Rettig Furniture. She will receive a mattress and may compete for a grand prize of 20000 dollars in cash stock or a paid vacation, with winners to be announced in mid August.
Denver Community school will begin August 27 with eight rural district schools also in operation. Students in rural schools must buy books and workbooks as before. Registration for Denver High on August 22 and 23 from 1 to 4 pm. returning students to collect books.
Arrangements near complete for the Tripoli Flower Show to be held at the Town Hall in conjunction with the Poultry and Egg Carnival on August 17. Divisions include glads in multiple color and spike categories, arrangements for tables, vases, baskets of flowers, and potted plants with about $50 in prizes.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Waterloo for Charles L. Courter 81 father of Mrs Nellie Bailey Tripoli. Burial was in Elmwood cemetery. He died Wednesday night from complications of old age. Born Hutchinson Kansas November 5 1874 he married Mary Pearl Jacobs February 19 1898 at Clinton Missouri. He worked for Hawkeye Steel Products retired member Modern Woodmen of America. Survived by wife four daughters 11 grandchildren 16 great grandchildren.
Dr Magnall announces office closure from Friday August 3 to Wednesday August 22 while on vacation. No appointments during the period.
Tripoli Red Sox rallied for a 5 4 win over West Side Billiards of Waterloo after trailing 4 2 entering the final frame. Duane Holm doubled, Larry Pooch cleared the bases with a triple, and Bob Sassman delivered a run scoring single to seal the comeback.
Thirty one piano students of Mrs Barbara Temple will present two recitals at the Tripoli High School auditorium next Sunday and Monday evenings. Each recital begins at 7 30 p m and all relatives and friends are invited. Retail sales in Bremer County through the first three months of 1956 totaled 4 107 322 dollars for 577 merchants, up from 3 975 996 dollars in 1955. Sumner fell from 840 512.50 to 759 077.60, while Tripoli and Waverly posted gains and rural sales climbed to 882 453.60. Average per merchant varied by town with Tripoli at 8 207.24, Sumner 7 441.93, Waverly 9 604.81, and rural 4 182.24.
Mr and Mrs K J Pierce of Waterloo moved last week to Tripoli. They relocated their trailer to Dr L J Magnall’s lot in the south part of Tripoli. Mr Pierce works at Wise Certified Public Accountant firm in Waterloo.
Elmer Drape 59 of near Frederika died Tuesday afternoon. Funeral services tentatively set for Saturday at 1 30 p m Rettig Funeral Home and 2 p m St John s Lutheran Frederika Rev Cyril Jandrey to be in charge. Complete obituary to appear next week.
Vandal tampered with fire trucks at the Fire Station rendering them inoperable. Howard Holm, Fire Chief, and Rudolph Piegors, Mayor, urge anyone with information to contact investigators. names withheld from the inquiry.
A paving contract for 132,516 was let by the Iowa Highway commission last week covering the junction of Highways 63 and 3 southwest of here. Fred Carlson Co. of Decorah was the winning bidder. Details are scarce but the project likely raises grade and removes circular turnoffs. Eight-tenths of a mile of cement paving is involved.

Tripoli hosts its first Poultry and Egg Carnival on Friday August 17 with at least two free rides for young children. Shetland ponies by Vern Lilibridge of Waverly and a small auto ride will be free for seven hours. A drawing offers a portable TV as grand prize plus other merchandise valued around 300 dollars.
Leo H. Orth of Washington township was chosen chair man of the Bremer county Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation committee at the township ASC delegates convention in Waverly. Albert Brandt and Walter W. Warneke were named vice chairman and third member respectively with John Gambaiani and Ernst Huck as alternates. All elected for a one year term starting Aug 1, they will oversee county level ASC programs including price supports cost-sharing conservation and soil bank policy making.
Cedar Rapids resident Mr. Evans reopened the Tripoli Theatre with weekly Saturday night performances. The 8 p m show features Three Stripes in the Sun with Aldo Ray Phil Carey Dick York and Mitsuko Kimura as the leads.
