The Independent notes a ten dollar Confederate note passed to over six people in Helena with several business men among the victims. It recalls a past case where two men were caught passing counterfeit bills defended by W F Sanders who used his own experience to claim the notes were worthless. The court released the men and warns locals to inspect currency more carefully to avoid loss.
An incorporation has been effected of the Helena Artesian Well company to sink a well in the Prickly Pear valley. Proposal to sink 2,000 feet unless a flowing well is secured. Capital stock set at 25,000 dollars with about half already taken. The piece notes Western development, housing demand in Washington, and comments on labor, population, and local politics including figures on Timothy Hopkins and Proctor, secretary of war, with mention of Clarkson and Lorenzo Sawyer.

In Butte a will contest has dragged on as jurors failed to agree for a second time and were discharged. Observers suspect a forged origin while others insist the document dates back at least ten years. Allegations of a plotted scheme by John A Davis to manufacture a will surface as witnesses testify under careful orchestration.
The New York Times notes the first lieutenant is the ship’s chief of staff and executive officer, handling 400 to 500 crew, directing fire in action, and remaining with the guns, while coordinating ship alterations and deck orders. Efforts were made to assign an assistant to the first lieutenant on the four big cruisers, but no action has been taken.
