Townesend Messenger issue dated Thursday evening June 24 1897 enters the post office as second class mail in Townsend. advertising rates listed and notices of official paper status for Broadwater County.
At the last county session on June 19 the commissioners approved bonds totaling 62 000 to be repaid in five ten and twenty years. Warrants of 51 000 were issued against county funds and must be paid first delaying treasury use. Bonds will bear up to six percent while warrants carry seven percent. Revenue from licenses exceeds 2 000 with about 4 000 more in general land funds. bond sale should remove obstacles to county progress.
Secretary Sherman signed a treaty transferring Hawaii to U S control with territorial government. The islands would become part of the United States with local law by a legislature and federal oversight, while public lands and debts are addressed and Chinese immigration restricted until Congress acts.
