The Supreme Court denied Henry A. Root motion to change venue in the Davis will case from Silver Bow county. The case is unlikely to be tried on merits this year as lawyers seek favorable outcomes and large fees.
Journal recounts the 1844 Carthage jail attack in New Jersey where Joseph and Hiram Smith were killed by a lynching mob. The brief, violent episode followed arrests amid state-wide unrest over alleged Mormon violence as armed assailants fired into the jail room and fatally wounded the Prophet, who attempted to escape.
A convention of the manufactures and producers of raw material will be held in Helena Montana during fair week from August 20 to 22 1897 to showcase local products and attract investment. Manufacturers miners and producers are urged to submit product samples with descriptions to the Builders and Manufactures Exchange of Helena for permanent exhibit consideration. Freight charges will be paid by the Exchange. Will Br Jones, Secretary.
Gov Toole returns from Washington noting new law requires maps of all state school lands. The Montana board sought government plats but faced $10,000 cost. Commissioner Carter helped secure $2,500 of federal funds to lithograph plots, with bids to run three months. Each plot will cost 25 cents, saving the state over $9,000.
