Ancient Greek Laurium Mines Yield Silver and Slaves
The Laurium silver mines in Greece, still producing silver lead and zinc, employ about 3,000 workers and supplied Themistocles with funds for the Persian war fleet. Ancient shafts, galleries, and chambers reveal a state-owned system with leases paying the state, while slave labor and primitive mining methods dominated. The vast output funded Athenian naval power and helped shape early Greek prosperity and conflict.
