San Francisco dispatch reports Anna Rose of Hawaii, 19, on her way to Topeka to be crowned carnival queen. She wows crowds with music, dance, and courtesy, while Topeka Carnival Knights organize a public reception, parade, and fundraising to furnish a fitting wardrobe and tribute.
Topeka readies for the arrival of Miss Anna Rose, the royal queen. A grand welcome parade will form as the train enters the city with the Knights of the carnival leading the procession. Australian papers report a daring bank robbery at the Bank of Victoria in Penhurst about 200 miles from Melbourne. A man with a revolver bound and gagged manager Mr Jamieson, obtained the keys to the strong room, and absconded with about 600 pounds in notes. Glen Thompson has been arrested amid strong evidence.
Jennie Hickey, 13, was found murdered on the breakwater at Thirty-sixth Street in Chicago. Rutledge, an expressman, was arrested after being seen near the scene and later returned to custody amid conflicting statements. The body showed signs of a struggle and partial undress as investigators pursued whether the death resulted from foul play or self harm.

Secretary Alger and party arrived from Knoxville at 9 90 oclock. The mayor and many citizens welcomed them at the depot. About 3 000 people gathered in the city Auditorium and applauded as Alger spoke thanking the crowd. He defended the medical, commissary and quartermaster departments amid charges of mismanagement. The party then spent the day at Chickamauga.
Bridgeport September 22. The Democratic state convention closes with the gold faction routing the silver element by adopting the 1396 platform and seizing control of state organization. Nominees include Daniel N. Morgan for governor Samuel Bassett for lieutenant governor Joseph T. Fanning for secretary Aas M. Ross for treasurer Levy N. Blydenbute for comptroller.
Walter Naging, once connected to a Shelbyville kidnapping story, formerly lived in Topeka. His mother Mia Nadling owned a large corner house on Monroe and Kious streets, famous for eccentric religious inscriptions and hosting traveling evangelists at no charge as long as they visited.

They meet with Acting Secretary of War Meiklejohn, General Miles, and President McKinley, advocating changes for-disabled soldiers and possible muster-out considerations, but no firm action is promised.
San Francisco September 22 The steamer China from Hong Kong reports General Merritt did not come aboard as expected. The ship carried Major General Ateerith and 150 Manila soldiers who returned due to sickness. General Merritt and staff remain elsewhere while Admiral Cervert arrived in Madrid with 66 incidents noted.
