Nineteen miners were killed and many wounded when sheriff and deputies fired on marching miners on a public highway near Hazelton. Miners denied arming themselves. Sheriff reports being struck by a miner as chaos erupts in the region.
Regiments sweep to Hazleton and Latimer as workers clash with deputies in a deadly mine strike. Dozens killed or wounded as deputies fire on crowds. Governor Hastings orders third brigade to the region. Local meetings demand action while officers deny provocation.
Wilkesbarre Pa Sept 11 Sheriff Martin returns from Hagietos to recount his deputies actions during a labor clash. He describes ordering a read proclamation halted marchers and firing into the air before deputies opened fire into the crowd as strikers pressed forward. He says he sought to prevent bloodshed but feared for lives and property and chose self defense.
Sept 11 reports troops from Schuylkill County joining Gen Gobin in Hazelton to aid in maintaining order. Fourth regiment detachments were sent for Harribure camp material, with wires cut isolating Hazelton. In Columbus on September 21 miners from Pennsylvania West Virginia Ohio and Indiana rejected the six cent per ton proposal by a vote of 407 to 415 against acceptance. The convention debated a resolution urging uptake of the proposal but district leaders were instructed to advise on sustaining the strike with possible ten day pauses for talks. The First Brigade of the Pennsylvania National Guard, largely Philadelphia units, is poised to deploy to Hazleton if services are needed. The Karnival Knights announce two vote contests on official souvenir buttons with free voting for wearers of the button. A first correct guess on the button picture earns $5. A second shipment of buttons is due soon as voting sites open at Rowley & Snow drugstore and other local shops.
Ban on duties and favorable conditions push shipments of lemons from this city to Liverpool. Operators report unprecedented export volumes with several thousand boxes sent on each vessel. Export drawback reduces costs, while English duties on green fruit are absent and freight is lower than local duties, shaping a new trade pattern.
