St Paul Minnesota September reports a grand parade stretching two miles with thousands onlookers. Children on a vacant square formed a waving flag as Gen Walker and veteran leaders reviewed the marchers. Temperature climbs to 85 as September begins with heat.
The parade began from Dayton and Western, marching south to Summit. Veterans from multiple departments, led by General Walker’s unit, formed divisions across states including Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Connecticut, Maine, California, and many others. Citizens saluted as veterans received flowers, bands played, and speeches honored the heroism of the Revolutionary era and past conflicts. Weather was clear and warm with southwest winds. thermometer read 39 to 64 degrees.
The Rev. T. G. Soares of First Baptist Church denounced phrases like cross of cota and crown of thorns as blasphemous in a Sunday sermon. He urged preserving the sanctity of the scriptures, stirring local discussion.
Senator Matt Quay arrived at Republican headquarters in New York accompanied by Chairman Hanna and hosted lunch at the Waldorf Hotel. State Manager plans Chicago trip tonight if not altered. Hanna delayed departure to confer with Quay. Quay declined to discuss campaign plans, citing dependence on the chairman’s suggestions.
Webb McNall and John Bradden addressed a silver meeting at Wanamaker school house last night. A Bryan club of 17 men was organized. Three silver Republicans joined the membership. Attendance was smaller than expected with 30 present.
A letter from Lincoln Nebraska received at Democratic headquarters notes expectations of a great crowd and possible delegation from Topeka for Bryan’s endorsement. Talk of an excursion is under consideration. In Connecticut Hartford on September 2 Larsin A Cook is nominated for governor.
Twenty thousand people greeted the Democratic banner at Springfield as the orator spoke on farmers, labor, and money. He argued that farmers and workers undergird the nation, attacked copper and gold standards, and mocked opponents with references to the potato bug and corn prices. A gasoline stove fire at 422 Tyler street caused no damage, as speeches by Bryan and others were distributed as campaign literature.
Hung Chane, interviewed at the Waldorf, says there are too many political parties in the United States and questions why newspapers do not unite them. He offers no comment on the country’s faults, compliments American skyscrapers, and notes they would not survive typhoons in China.
London reports a letter from Henry Watterson of the Louisville Courier Journal to a friend. He says he cannot add to his prior statements on U.S. politics and notes he is far enough away to avoid danger, joking about not being struck by the Indian lightning.
Early county totals from Vermont place Republican Grout with a 30,039 plurality for governor. Reported from St Albans at 2 20 P M show nearly 40,000 votes counted with Republican advantage across counties.
A large gas well on the Hays farm nine miles north of Independence caught fire, burning last night with flames shooting up to 100 feet. The Neodesha Gas Company owns the idle well, which neighbors feared was set by rival firms. Efforts to control the blaze continued as residents remained uneasy.
May Thomas McNeal leads the Topeka contest for Fall Festival parade queen while elderly Kanss2 candidate is supported by Mrs. Morrill and Mrs. Hungate. North Topeka voters are offered a chance to vote at Arnold's drug store but so far no ballots have been cast.
A New York dispatch reports a letter received by Edward Simmons of Fourth National Bank from a Michigan bank president. The note asks for cones of a title book and mocks silver lunatics, promising to “knock the spots out” next November in a heated political fight.
Trento September 2 The Democratic party committee of Trenton controlled by silver men adopts a resolution that Ford Democrats must swear to support Bryan and Sewall to elect delegates to the September 9 state convention for nominating presidential electors. The city committee members, who judge the primaries, will enforce the resolution.
Rev Sam Smetl is in Washington en route home from Illinois where he campaigned for the Democratic ticket. He says the state enthusiam is unmatched and predicts Ohio Illinois and Indiana will vote for Bryan and Sewall with thousands of Republicans switching.
Washington dispatch notes Fusion will not lead to free silver. Alexander Gainwells ex United States senator comments that a large Democratic vote for sound money is expected. McKinJey may seek advantage from the split and dispute.
A crowd gathers at Tomlinson Hall in Indianapolis for the first national Democratic convention of 1890s memory with Goldenrods and banners on display. Gov Flower and prominent figures including ex congressman Outhwaite and Secretary Wilson attend as delegates cheerfully assemble. Senator John M. Palmer presides as gavel calls the gathering to order with an invocation to start proceedings.
