The Sun editor Charles A. Dana dies after a prolonged illness. He passed Sunday morning amid family and doctors at his home, with extreme heat said to have hastened the end. Dana, 75, left a legacy as a towering journalist and editor whose career shaped the New York Sun and the broader press.
The Triton struck a rock in heavy rain and sank within 15 minutes at 120 fathoms. Only 42 of the crew and passengers were saved, many badly injured, while others perished or were lost at sea. Captain Ricardo killed himself as the ship went down. The Maria Cristina recovered some survivors and crew from the scene near Moto Castle, with others drifting on planks for hours.
Conductor Alex Ferguson is discharged from the Santa Fe Railway following an official decision by Assistant General Superintendent Avery Turner. The Lang station wreck, involving Train No. 2, led to the joint responsibility of the crew's engineers and frontend workers. Ferguson had about 70 percent service time with the company since the accident. He had been recovering at his Kansas City home after sustaining injuries, and his return to work was halted by the discharge.
In Tancaster New York Edward Voll knocked out Frank Kazewski of Depauw with a blow over the heart Saturday night. Kazewski collapsed, received aid, and died Sunday morning. Voll has been arrested. The casualty occurred after the fight at a local venue.
Washington October 18 The director of the mint submitted to the secretary of the treasury his report for the fiscal year 1897 detailing mint and assay office operations. It includes bullion deposits, coinage values, silver and gold production, seigniorage, and international price movements.
New York October 18 Herald reports actress Bettina Gerard once a Wall Street society belle is now a patient at Bellevue Hospital. Listed as Betty Schuyler on hospital books, she is said to be partially paralyzed and possibly unable to recover mentally. Her health decline follows marriages to Arthur Pad, John J. Buffet, Harrison Wolfe, and Willams of Nat Goodwin company, with earlier link to Gener Albert Ordwix.
Colorado Springs Oct 18 Winfield Scott Stratton the Independence mine owner presented ex Senator H A W Taber with 316 000 to use anew Stratton a multiple millionaire with the Independence mine enlarged to 10100000 a few years ago he was a poor carpenter.
The revenue cutter Salman F. Chase failed to mark buoys and grounded on Cumming Polne shoal near Fort Sumter. Charleston aid arrived promptly. the Chase was towed by the Cecelia tug to a harbor anchorage while Colfax, the revenue cutter, stood by.
Chicago October 18 opener of the ninth week in the Luetgert murder case. Judge Tuthill instructs the jury that conviction requires proof beyond reasonable doubt that Louisa Luetgert is dead and killed by Adolph Luetgert with malice aforethought. The jury hears that the state must prove corpus delicti and that the defendant may not be forced to testify.
Chicago reports Luetgert, acquitted, considering investing in a downtown saloon or opening one himself if a prominent location can be secured. He might exhibit the vat and Great Danes as a side show, while Tumetcert serves beer. He will also review KimesIf income toocal museum if a manager is found.
Lotta M Crabtree known as Lotta sues for partial payment on a 1951 loan of 20 dollars secured by a South Main Street business property in Akron. The suit targets Henry E Abbey estate and related parties including Arnold Rand and Pennsylvania Lumber Co. The mortgage on the property allegedly covers its full value and no repayment has been made, with interest totaling 2.90.
Washington dispatches say the bureau of engraving and printing is working full tilt to produce small notes from 1 to 20 dollars. Daily outputs include 5 and 10 dollar notes, 1 dollar treasury notes and silver certificates, with the aim to keep good currency balance in subtreasuries so country banks lack for small notes through this month and into November.
J F Kline and Dick Cowley completed travel and hotel plans for the Baltimore Al American game to be held in Topeka next Saturday. Washington October 18 Surgeon General Newton L Bates navy physician to the president died at the Sherman hotel at 9:39 this morning from renal trouble. He was appointed acting surgeon general two weeks ago to supersede Tryon and took the oath of office in his temporary capacity. He entered the navy in 1861 from New York and had served as medical director with rank of captain at the naval museum of hygiene in New York City.
London reports poet and Telegraph co editor Sir Edwin Arnold wed a Japanese woman yesterday. A bicycle missing case linked to W F McFennry of the Capital Cycle Company. a wheel sold at Berry was investigated after a match with the rented bicycle description. Sergeant Donovan noted the wheel sale and the ongoing inquiry.
The Havana business community and influential Cubans push for annexation to the United States. They plan to engage American businessmen to present a petition to Washington, arguing autonomy fails to quell the insurgency and that annexation offers life and property protections. Spanish aut nomist and conservative factions remain divided on the path forward.
A Peking correspondent reports Li Hung Chang has been in ill health for three months and will resign as grand secretary of the Tsung Li Yuan. The Emperor grants him leave for an indefinite period, though he hopes to influence policies related to reform. Li aims to preserve China’s stability while preparing to return to duties if possible.
