Secretary Gage renews push to retire greenbacks and withdraw government backing from national bank notes, signaling a major shift in monetary policy and the move to standardize currency across the nation.
Treasury Secretary Gage tells bankers that surplus revenues should be deposited in national banks and used to retire legal tender liabilities while reforming currency and banking to serve commerce. He argues for limiting government debt burdens and extending prudence in finance to strengthen public finances.
Milwaukee October 1 The American Bankers Association convenes with prayers by Rev Charien S Lester of Milwaukee. Reports claim business is in satisfactory condition and discussions cover banking practices and war revenue act repeal. Resolutions favor penalties for anarchists and draft/indemnity issues and a move to improve banking laws.
The Trust Section of the American Bankers Association held its fifth annual session. Howard Green of Milwaukee welcomed delegates while William G. Mather of Cleveland chaired. Secretary James R. London October 14 6 The feud between the Durham and Worcester regiments ended in a serious affray at Alderson. The Worcesters with fixed bayonets and ball cartridges assaulted the Durhams quarters. Severe fighting followed and many men were injured with several suffering dangerous bayonet wounds.
New York Det. M says the Journal of Commerce notes several soft coal operators planning export handling. The deal targets home trade and exports via joint ventures to set up and charter coal carrying steamers and storage in specific ports. An aggregate output near one million tonnes is cited.
Mrs Shawtell and Mrs Ewing of Te cumseh narrowly escaped serious injury when their buggy collided with a car at the West Sixth Avenue crossing near Jackson Street. The buggy was crushed, both women sustained bruises, and Absent Bolling was transported for care though both women were not believed to be seriously hurt.
Senator Morgan of Alabama met President Roosevelt to discuss the Nicaragua canal bill as Congress nears. The president said he would submit a new treaty closer to Morgan’s views but did not detail terms. Morgan praised the policy of conciliation and appointing the best men to offices in the South.
In Moodus Connecticut the post office was robbed with stamps worth four thousand dollars. Judge Dunne presides over Burke habeas corpus arguments as Kavanagh and colleagues contend the case falls outside state law and challenge the validity of the Salaried Inspector’s office. Weather notes from Chicago forecast generally fair conditions for Kansas with mild temperature changes and variable winds.
Sofia reports a letter found at Miss Ellen Stone's parents' door claiming a child birth for Mme Tsilka. The Russian government pledges help in rescue while Britain and Vienna dispatch varying notes on ransom and brigand activity in Macedonia. H R Cloughey andd Sr Hantrum of Cherryvale Kansas seek a location for an automobile factory in Topeka. Cloughey touts patented improvements and plans to distribute sales cards while presenting machine photographs to Major Anderson of the Commercial Club and BE Benedict. A suitable site and market plan are sought for large scale manufacturing.
Charles J. Webb is confined to Banta Me hospital for two weeks and expected to assume new duties October 1. T. Han advances to the position of checking clerk in President Ripley’s Chicago office, with the aim to begin the new duties soon.
Everett P Hanes of Salina, assistant attorney for the government, appears before a court of inquiry in Washington on the Schley-Hampson case. He is described as a native of Salina and son of BJ Manns, with several brothers also in government service.
New York October reports attorney EA Bigelow will travel to Baltimore to appeal Judge Morris's decision in the Fett E. Downs case against the United States. He plans to file the appeal and seeks an early ruling from the United States circuit court of appeals at Richmond at the November term. Bigelow disputes claims of Sugar Refining Company counsel at the original hearing and notes opposition from beet sugar interests.
