Crowded Topeka cemetery scenes mark Decoration Day with unveiling of Gage monument near Kansas City battle site. Rain delays ceremonies as veterans, post members, and citizens decorate graves. Monument stands twenty feet, Vermont granite, figure of a soldier watching the city.
Gage, who shunned public praise, planned to unveil a cemetery monument by stealth. His brother Norris read the prepared presentation praising Gages gift to memory of comrades from the Battle of the Blue in 1864. The stone bears the coat of arms and crests with inscriptions and unit details.
Mr Gage, long driven by affection and respect for his fallen comrades, funded and oversaw an original monument for the Blue at Topeka. He spoke of planning begun last summer, with design by himself and inscriptions written by him, aided by Guild for construction. The project, costing about eight thousand dollars, was intended for Decoration Day observance with Gage deferring public speaking to his brother. The dedication included Howel Jones praising Captain Ross Burns and Kansas heroes, with reference to General Price’s forces and the Arkansan theater of action.
A large northern city honors Confederate dead with a monument to 6,000 prisoners buried at Oakwood cemetery. Generals Gordon Hampton Longstreet attend with veterans and civilians from both sides. Hampton lauds magnanimity of Grant and Lincoln while urging unity and remembrance of shared American history.
A listing of fallen soldiers from the engagement known as the Battle of the Daniel Haypiiy.
