A Journal reporter visits Scranton where 216 people must be fed for weeks more as supplies run low. Osage County commissioners are accused of doing nothing in response to the shortage and crisis.
A Topeka Capital report describes Osage County’s reluctance to fund Scranton relief while nearby counties donate heavily. It cites a 72,000 dollar county balance, scarce flour aid, and a state relief effort led by Governor Morris to cover miners and families. Charity continues despite political pushback as Scranton residents face food shortages.
The outside Santa Fe shafts employ about 187 miners earning 3 to 5.45 dollars monthly, while 187 in the main shafts earn 10 to 13 dollars. W E Dom a Topeka lawyer and suspected swindler was arrested today in Chicago with two detectives aiding Deputy Sheriff Tohn Wilkerson of Topeka Kansas. Dom faces charges of embezzlement and long association with a collection agency. Postoffice Closed observes holiday with limited morning mail delivery and normal dispatch.
Justice Cox grants Mrs. Mary E. Sackett a divorce and child custody in East city court. The defendant, Harry A. Sackett, once a silhouette artist, led a scandalous life spanning Minneapolis Chicago and Niagara Falls. Eloped with Frances Davenport in 1894. later arrested for bigamy in Topeka. Sackett married and divorced Davenport in Montclair in 1881.
Burglars struck W. A. Gardner and J. O. Peebler in Meriden Kansas last night, gaining access by removing a rear door panel. Gardner’s shop lost about $2 in small change, Peebler’s inventory vanished with around a dozen pocket knives missing.
The Cleveland Municipal League Convention heard Clinton Rogers Woodruff of the National Reform League praise women's growing role in municipal reform.
