Philadelphia May 18 The coatmakers branch of the Garment Makers union joins the garment workers strike for higher wages. Several other branches plan meetings this afternoon and evening. If manufacturers do not concede, 000 to 500 workers may join by week’s end.
The Senate naval affairs committee today considered armor plate for warships with Secretary Lone of the navy department present. They unanimously recommended fixing armor plate price at $500 per ton. Manufacturers would accept $425 per ton, and may accept the lower price.
A committee of 28 veterans will meet at the office of the commissioner of elections to organize the Old Soldiers Fall Festival. Chairman Ed G Myate states subcommittees will handle music and other features with full attendance urged for the session. Emigration Bill Passes Reichstag in Bernt on May 19 as the Reichstag also approves oleomargarine with a 166 to 10 vote.
Philadelphia May 19 John Wanamaker defended his speech to the Business Men's League of Pennsylvania saying he meant every word. He urged decisive action on tariff and silver as multiple issues loom and claimed about 240,000 men would applaud if McKinley halted office appointments until tariff legislation is settled.
Officials announce a public gathering to commemorate the late Queen Victoria. The event invites all citizens of the United States who support humanitarian aims and goodwill. The organizers emphasize unity beyond nationality, urging broad participation.

W R Hazen brother of District Judge Z T Hazen was fined 50 dollars for contempt after a courtroom dispute over obtaining client depositions. Hazen resisted furnishing evidence and argued against the procedure, prompting the judge to raise the penalty to 59 dollars before the matter cooled. Hazen then refused to further pursue the case.

Sheriff Kepsey reported late this afternoon that the boat tied to Win Maddox crossing the Kansas River from Silver Lake to Valencia was found about four miles west of Peoria, lying bottom side up near shore. The discovery disproves scuttling and supports the theory that Maddox was drowned.
The second pier at the new bridge has reached the water line with a smooth cement table finished. The pier south of it is nearly complete and will receive finishing touches tonight. Form work for the arches has begun and in a week more river development will be visible.
Five miles south of Bayfield, Wisconsin, a bottle washed ashore with a faded note from 40 sailors lost when the steamer Manistee sank on Lake Michigan nearly 14 years ago. The message described a night voyage from Bayfield toward Michigan and hinted at a devastating storm that doomed the wooden steamer.
Chicago May 19. Dense smoke from the city wind pushes the steamer E M Peck off course and she grounds on Hyde Park reef five miles south of the harbor. It had sighted fights on the breakwater thirteen miles north. Forty men attempted to jettison coal and recover cargo while the ship drifted into the lake.
Brick made near Topeka is hailed as the best in the world with a plant producing 1900 bricks this year and full operation continues. A shipment of 73,000 bricks to Wichita will pave streets there while tests of cheap curb made from Topeka vitrified brick clay aim to yield a residence street standard. City Engineer Barnes endorses the new 10 inch wide curb measuring 16 inches long and four inches thick for local streets.
Weather observer notes conditions not favorable for rain despite forecast of showers tonight and tomorrow in Kansas. Temperature at 2 10 was 8 degrees with wind from the southwest.
A. H. Johnson of TL Fast Eighth Street captured a 15 pound snapping turtle in Shunganunga yesterday. The turtle was unusually vicious and bore an inscription carved on its shell. The figures are nearly obliterated but Johnson believes “01” can be read. He wonders what the inscription may signify.
The body of Mrs Amanda Hollingsworth aged 60 was found at the foot of a stairway in her son's house. She had been missing since last Friday and died after a fall from the back stairs. The odor from the remains led to discovery after four days with the family having meals nearby.
In Missouri, the Court of Appeals ruled railroads are not required to carry bicycles free of charge as baggage. The case arose after JL bought a first class ticket to St Louis and was refused bicycle handling, prompting a test suit after an April decision by Judge Russell sided with the cyclist.
On May 18 the Belk nap Savings Bank closed its doors in Laconia New Hampshire. About 1,000,000 dollars is due depositors. The bank will go into voluntary liquidation.
A Lamia dispatch dated May 12 reports a suspension of hostilities between Greek and Turkish forces and authorization for Crown Prince Constantine to seek an armistice. Guthrie Oklahoma May 29 Large quantities of remarkably pure salt ore are being marketed here and shipped across the territory from Crystal Salt Works west of town near Okeenee Blaine county. The salt is manufactured on the claim of Mae Laura White formerly of western Kansas, who with her partner Mae Charlotte Wilts operate the works turning about thirty barrels every six hours. Two young women ride into the Cheyenne country to fund their college via profits from their venture. The water source feeds a Tari Stream nearby with highly saline water.
A New Orleans city council special committee will tour for two weeks to inspect sewerage, drainage, street cleaning, water supply, and electric lighting. Members include Clarke Lafaye Sherrause Leahy Biol derith and Public Works Commissioner McGary. They will travel through Chicago Cincinnati Memphis St Louis Indianapolis and Louisville. A separate church program features Rev D Dr Boyle presenting Why Christ Came into the World with Prof Easton directing a 20-voice choir. Rev D D Hoyte to speak on Why Christ Died in the World at First Christian Church on Topeka Avenue. Teams are active since the church dedication in May.

The Lisbon correspondent reports that the Spanish minister Emilio de Lome responds positively to President McKinley’s recent dispatches praising measured tone and restrained language, signaling diplomatic calm despite recent tensions.
In an authorised interview Duspuv De Lome defends Spain while praising President McKinley and Secretary Sherman. He says the United States places amity before Cuba issues and that American money and property are not at stake. He stresses Spain will assist Spaniards in Cuba and favors U S aid to nationals, amid tensions of the Cuban situation.
In Cripple Creek a local bank failed amid a general panic linked to creditor demands. Harry H. Clark aided by FE H Jaenty oversaw the collapse as depositors faced losses while F Ly Street and Jacobite figures faced legal scrutiny over finances and misdeeds surrounding the bank's brief operation last summer.
