A mob near Scottdale Pennsylvania attacked a woman then fled as deputies opened fire wounding one person severely. The incident involved a firearm exchange prompting a police response and an investigation into the shooting's circumstances.
A mob of about two hundred women and strikers attacked deputies at the McClure Coke company Painter works in Scormpans Pennsylvania. Deputies fired after being surrounded. several injured or killed, including Hungarian women and workers. Sheriff with forty men arrests twenty implicated rioters.
Two city ministers Reverends W L Byers of North Congregational and E S Farrand of Westminster Presbyterian publicly declared for woman suffrage at the Topeka Equal Suffrage association meeting at Music Hall. The group asked Farrand to open the suffrage mass meet on Thursday evening.
A Shawnee county Third ward Republican meeting last night backed a Morrill delegation to the state convention. Names of delegates and alternates are listed, with dispute over whether the gathering was a regular caucus or a secret move. A late call for a new caucus at Span is reported, drawing further opposition.
State officials led by Governor Lewelling return from Indian Territory with a plan to lease a five by five mile tract in the Cherokee nation about twelve miles south of Siloam Springs Ark. They hope to secure lead and zinc deposits and have laid out £50 each for the lease with further negotiations to obtain additional lands. A sample slate showed oil content and lead ore promising high assay potential though no mines are opened yet.
Edna Carson filed for divorce from Frank Carson in district court claiming he tried to kill her with a knife. The pension payroll for April totals 51.50, $100 below March. Local officials report a busy pension season as posts offices and courthouses handle rising workloads.
Coxey and his lieutenants Browns Jones arraigned in district police court for violation of the capitol grounds act. Senator Allen of Nebraska argued constitutionality as spectators filled the room. Judge Miller ruled the act constitutional and denied a special trial.
Attorney General Little received three letters from M Flora of Ponca City Oklahoma offering affidavits alleging crooked actions in the 1893 railroad property assessment. Little says the board behaved honestly and fairly and may sell any affidavits to Republicans if desired. Also reports Topeka rain, and the death of T M Shotwell 78 at his daughter's home with funeral set Saturday.
Washington May 4 report by Bostner, chair of the special judiciary committee, concludes the judge Jenkins abused court power with injunctions against striking Northern Pacific workers. It notes no impeachment charges, cites dangers of federal receiverships and contempt powers, and urges statutory limits on court authority while warning against further expansion of federal judicial power.
A committee report argues the protection of property heirs should stay with the executive, and contempt powers be defined by law. The two hour discussion yielded no action. Rep W A Stone dissents, calling it an attempt at judicial ruling, with no minority report yet filed. Sheriff Burdge saw Turner at Leavenworth penitentiary, where the forger seeks pardon and praises time served.
