Santa Fe shops shut when workers found gates locked at 9 am. Union leaders ordered a systemwide strike, affecting Topeka and other areas. Company officials blamed union pressure and warned of nonunion replacements while seeking a peaceful resolution.
A long dispute over the Santa Fe machinists strike is chronicled with progress reports. Washington May 2 Senator McCumber presented to the president the resignation of Melvie Grigsby U S attorney for the Nome district Alaska. The resignation is to take effect July 1 and no successor was announced. The case stemmed from disobedience of orders and an allegation Grigsby received 10000 from the Pioneer Minty Company to secure immunity from prosecution. Grigsby admitted receiving money half cash half stock describing it as an attorney fee. The long pending matter ends with the resignation.
Chicago residents were trapped as a three story Ardine building on Himstead Street burned on May 2. Joseph Webb was fatally naphyxiated and several occupants narrowly escaped. Firemen acted quickly to control the blaze as stairways became impassable. The fire caused damage in the thousands and injured firefighters and bystanders.
May Day actions spread from Boston to Waterbury and Schenectady as machinists, bakers, carpenters, tinsmiths and coal handlers walk out or are locked out. In Chicago, 6,200 wage earners in multiple factories joined strikes and lockouts, with 4,000 shoemakers affected, while Lime and other trades considered wage demands. New England sees bakers and carpenters striking for longer weeks and higher pay, with specific demands in Cambridge, Lynn, Brockton, and Springfield.
Several joint raids were conducted Saturday night resulting in four arrests. George Klauer was personally visited by the chief, Stahl, praised by the officer. Revers charged with beer at a rear room. Kicker at the Elmun Kicker place on Quincy Street faced liquor seizures and bonded out, later detained again at Topeka. Ed Timon’s North Topeka depot raid occurred during the evening.
Allan Doyle was stabbed by Lee Harris on Kansas Avenue near Fourth Street last Sunday night. Harris turned himself in after eluding police. Doyle was hospitalized. Harris faces multiple charges, with a May 5 trial date and prior bond conditions.
Washburn college hosts interclass basketball and other sports with freshman against sophomore. The morning girls game ended 8 to 4 for sophomores. Freshmen won the chess event five to zero. This afternoon trick sports include the closing class events with trophies awarded for high scores.
