Joseph Medi editor of the Chicigs Petrie died yesterday in San Antonio Texas. He was conscious until death and whispered to his physician ten minutes before passing about the newer question. His grandson Robert Et McCormick was present. His remains will be sent to Chicago for burial.
San Antonio Tex March 17 The death of Joseph Medill editor of the Tribune in the Hotel Menger San Antonio was due to heart disease and kidney trouble. He had been an invalid for three years. His daughter Jo verhine in Paris and in California provided a severe shock. He spent winters in California then Texas and Santa Rosa before settling in San Antonio. He died Wednesday night. His two sons in law H W Patterson and R S McCormick were en route to San Antonio. Medill, age 57, owned a large stake in the Tribune and had other real estate and bond investments. He leaves two daughters and was mourned by President Kinley and Senators Hanna and Culler Mason.
A Rock Island Texas fast express leaving Topeka wrecked at Volland near Alma after a defective switch caused wheels to jump track. One man killed and twenty six injured as baggage and smoking cars burned, passengers leaped to the embankment and a relief train rushed to the scene.
A derailment on the Rock Island line caused a tank car to leave the track as the engine and cars jumped the switch. Conductor Thomas and Engineer Riley led engine 22 in efforts to control the derailed train. Baggageman William Freeman burned to death. James McSpadden severely injured, possibly internally. Injured passengers were cared for in the station house as wreckage was cleared and the track reopened by morning.
Vancouver dispatch reports a clash between American and Canadian miners near the Porcupine river off the Dalton trail. Four men were killed, with several wounded as the Americans, asserting the new placer pool is in American territory, fought a brief engagement with Canadian mounted police observers nearby. Leaders named include C. G. Lewis and Charles Lelich of Los Angeles, W. S. Hawes of Minnesota, A. Maconighy of Chicago, and F. Fornisch of Denver. The combatants then retreated to their camps, amid warnings of further clashes if claims remain disputed.
The steamer Excelsior from Copper River Alaska brings word that six men died on Valdes Glacier around March 1. Victims include Adolph Erhardt M Miller Alfred Alleman all of New York Dr Edwin Logan of Denver Rudolph Eveckamp of Louisville Ky and August Schultz of New York. Only Dr Logan’s body was not recovered and buried at Valdes. Ernest, Miller, and Alleman were with a New York scientific prospecting company.
In Leavenworth on March 17 Fred Stier advertising manager of the Leavenworth Times married Miss Lacy Goldsmith the eldest daughter of merchant Mr Goldsmith. The elopement occurred after 6 PM with Miss Goldsmith leaving her father's store to the Times office then to the courthouse where the ceremony was performed.
Ex county judge John te Stone is defendant in a circuit court suit for 3,000 filed by N and L C Fisher of 1388 Cherry Street Kansas City. The Fisher home fronts a large maple tree that overhangs Stone property. they seek damages for destruction of the tree by arson and burning.
New York dispatch from Havana reports a large popular demonstration honoring General Gomez at Quinta De Los Molinos. Pro-Gomez leaders push him as sole guarantor of Cuban independence while he hedges on accepting a presidency. Gomez’s shift contrasts with his earlier retirement vow and his offer of support to Puerto Rican independence. Meade fleet money for Cuban soldiers sails in, while municipal officials in Cuba move to remove favored civil governor and police head. Major General Chaffee at Vedado sick with malaria. First Texas and Second Louisiana regiments set to return home. Savannah bound for the latter on a Ward Line steamer.
